The Operations and Maintenance department within Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Sprinkler Systems Fitter.
The Life Safety Systems Department is responsible for the primary life safety systems: fire alarm control panels on the campus-wide control network. The systems typically include detection, communication and signaling devices, sprinklers, preaction systems, deluge systems, standpipe fire fighting systems, fire pumps, fire hydrants, fire hoses, fire extinguishers, chemical fire suppression systems (halon, inergen, CO), kitchen fire suppression systems (dry and wet chemical), hazardous fume and gas detection systems, building emergency control devices as well as other peripherals.
This position reports to the Life Safety Systems Supervisor. Work is performed under minimal supervision. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on standby. Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies. This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 meters, heavy lifting up to and including 25 kilograms that may require performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Fabricates, installs, tests, maintains, inspects and repairs sprinkler systems in stores, office buildings, hotels, and residences.
- Install wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems, carbon dioxide, chemical and foam extinguishing systems, stand pipe and hose systems and fire pump systems.
- Read and interpret engineered drawings and specifications to determine layout requirements.
- Select the type and size of pipe required and arrange the piping to provide fire protection.
- Install clamps, brackets and hangers to support the piping system and sprinkler and fire protection equipment.
- Join and connect pipes and piping sections to related piping systems, tanks, mains, pumps, compressors and control equipment using various pipe joining methods.
- Test systems for leaks using air or water pressure.
- Inspect, maintain and repair piping, fixtures and controls including hydrant, pump and sprinkler head connections.
- Troubleshooting and repair of systems.
- Ensure codes and University procedures and standards are adhered to.
- Training of campus personnel and the University of Calgary projects teams on system operations and effect.
- Responding to emergencies on campus to direct personnel and ascertain problems.
- Ensuring compliance with NFPA Standards, Alberta Building Code, Electrical Code and University of Calgary established standards, policies and procedures.
- Communication with customers, contractors, suppliers and trade staff to successfully complete tasks.
- Completion of computerized records related to work is also required.
- Analyzes information and evaluates results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Monitors and reviews information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
- Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Sprinkler Systems Fitter certified journeyperson or hold a recognized trade certificate.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of work experience as a journeyman Sprinkler Systems Fitter, preferably in industrial, commercial, institutional environment.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills as interaction with a diverse group such as engineers, faculty, fire inspectors, fire fighters, safety inspectors, management, planning and projects groups, as well as various campus departments is expected.
- Good working knowledge of, current Alberta Building and Fire Codes and pertinent NFPA Standards is required.
- Expertise in sprinkler systems, chemical suppression systems and gas detection systems.
- Able to perform physically demanding work, be able to work on ladders and/or various heights, and lift up to 25 kilograms.
- Able and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc.
- Must have good hearing and be able to perform physically demanding work in all types of weather conditions.
- Must have good manual dexterity, be able to distinguish colors and do precise work as consequence of error would result in unsafe conditions for University occupants.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner.
- Proven record of providing superior customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- A valid Class 5 driver's license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
