About the role

The Regional Dementia Care Program provides comprehensive specialized assessment and treatment of older adults (usually >65 years old) and/or adults with an age-related dementia, which is complicated by behavioural and psychological symptoms, and/or medical comorbidities that exceed the capacity of the community, general hospital, complex continuing care and long-term care system.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate required (training delivered by Health Centre upon hire)
  • Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate required
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of Dementia including best practices for assessment and management of responsive behaviours
  • Montessori Methods for Dementia and PIECES an asset
  • Experience working with older adults demonstrating responsive behaviours including evidence of creative application of Personhood
  • Knowledge of relevant acts and regulations e.g. Substitute Decision Makers, Controlled Acts, PHIPA, College of Nurses of Ontario standards of practice, etc.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively with members of a multi-disciplinary team, including participation in nursing programming

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively deal with clients, families, employees, service providers

  • Understanding of trauma informed care principles and able to apply within all relationships and interactions

  • Computer application experience required including advanced level of skill in documentation

  • Ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in care planning required

  • Must be willing to work shifts in other programs as required

  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors

  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization

  • Good attendance and work record required

  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.
