About the role

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is seeking a permanent, full-time Social Media & Content Advisor who will focus on the work of the Wilder Institute, crafting engaging social media content that inspires action for wildlife, wild places, and people on our planet. In this role, your work will help tell the stories that matter and directly support our vision of a future where people and wildlife thrive, together!

This position is responsible for developing and executing social media content strategies across digital platforms, ensuring content reflects our brand voice and strategic priorities. They will ensure consistency and quality across channels while supporting audience engagement and community management.

The Social Media & Content Advisor will use creative storyteller and a strong expertise in social media strategy and content creation to translate complex conservation work into compelling digital narratives. They are a detail-oriented writer and editor, a creative thinker, and a collaborative team player who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

The Social Media & Content Advisor is a member of the Brand & Public Relations team and works closely with internal teams including Marketing, Conservation & Science, Development, Animal Care, Health & Welfare, Conservation Education, and Volunteer Relations to deliver consistent and impactful content across digital platforms.

What you will do:

  • Plan, create, and distribute engaging content for the organization’s social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Create, edit, and publish short-form video content optimized for social media.
  • Create and manage an editorial content calendar, ensuring timely publication and alignment with campaigns, news, and updates.
  • Execute social media community management, including responding to comments and direct messages according to established protocols and best practices.
  • Track, analyze, and report on social media metrics to guide strategy and content decisions.
  • Develop content briefs for influencer and brand ambassador collaborations, providing clear direction on messaging, deliverables, and brand alignment, and collaborating with internal teams and external partners to bring content to life.
  • Provide copywriting support and advice to internal clients as required, including reviewing, editing or writing copy for video scripts, website, paid-social media campaigns, signage, or other marketing collateral.
  • Ensure content aligns with our tone of voice, content guidelines, and editorial standards, adapting to updates as they evolve.
  • Support the management of digital assets (photo and video) including cataloging and archiving.
  • Generate creative ideas by monitoring trends, consulting with experts, and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Provide backup support for scheduling and publication of content on digital screens and intranet.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships across the various departments and provide timely service to other departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Marketing, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in social media management, content creation, or communications, ideally in conservation, nonprofit, or environmental sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience creating social media content, including writing, editing, and producing short-form video content (i.e. Reels, Stories).
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms, trends, and analytics tools, including SEO, keyword research, and Google Analytics.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Strong storytelling, writing, and editing skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to content development.
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle sensitive or confidential information.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Familiarity with paid social media advertising is considered an asset.
  • Experience with photography and video production is considered an asset.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily office-based with extended computer use.
  • Social media monitoring during evenings and weekends.
  • Opportunity to visit the Archibald Biodiversity Centre or attend a field conservation activity from time to time.
  • Flexible work schedule (generally three days in the office and up to two remote days, subject to change due to evolving business needs).
  • Some lifting of materials (signs, boxes, tables) may be required from time to time.

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
