Support legal outcomes that matter to families and communities across Ontario

Join our team and use your legal knowledge, organizational, and analytical skills to support property rights and estate matters. You will ensure files are accurate and court-ready, contributing to fair and well-informed decisions.

About the job

You will:

  • review estate and trust accounts at the preliminary stage
  • identify issues and objections for court audit purposes
  • perform detailed preliminary reviews of estate and trust accounts prepared by executors, administrators and trustees
  • handle a large volume of estate notice files, including review of estate and trust accounts
  • identify objections and communicate with counsel or trustee to resolve the issues
  • draft affidavits and other legal documents
  • prepare correspondence and organize files to assist lawyers with estates and civil litigation files
  • respond to general inquiries

What you bring to the team

Legal knowledge

You have:

  • knowledge of estate administration and/or estate accounting

  • the ability to interpret and apply relevant statutes, rules and regulations (e.g. Courts of Justice Act, Trustee Act, Estates Administration Act, Estates Act, Insurance Act, the Children's Law Reform Act

  • knowledge of legal office procedures (e.g. Rules of Civil Procedure)

  • You are familiar with legal terminology, documents and court processes

  • You can research and review legal documents and precedents, initiate follow-up, coordinate activities, interpret policies and procedures

Research, problem-solving and analytical skills

  • You have research, analytical and problem solving skills

You can:

  • identify and correct omissions and errors and ensure accurate account processing
  • draft semi-routine and complex correspondence and legal documents
  • negotiate with external counsel and trustees to resolve legal issues in a timely manner

Communication and interpersonal skills

You have:

  • oral communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to use appropriate legal terminology when consulting with stakeholders and providing explanations

  • the ability to communicate sensitive information clearly, accurately, and professionally

  • demonstrated written communication skills to draft clear, accurate, and well-structured legal documents and correspondence

  • the ability to apply legal precedents or guidance provided by counsel when preparing routine and complex legal materials

  • You can exchange legal information and make recommendations

Organizational, customer service and teamwork skills

You can:

  • prioritize own workload and bring forward items and cases to ensure completeness

  • meet strict deadlines and ensure timeframes are met in a high volume environment

  • You have customer service and teamwork skills to provide support for professional litigation lawyers, and respond promptly to issues

Computer skills

  • You are proficient with office software such as MS Word, Excel and Outlook, to input and extract data, manipulate text and data, prepare correspondence, other legal documents and reports
  • You can use case management system to open files, enter, update, track and provide summary case information
