DESCRIPTION:
The Oncology nurse is an integral member of the Cancer Centre team who collaborates with the Oncologist and other team members to coordinate services, ensure quality patient care, and provide continuity of care. The RN is responsible for ensuring that practice and conduct meets legislative requirements and the standards of the profession as designed by the College of Nurses of Ontario. RNs’ practice will also comply with Kingston Health Sciences Centre policies and procedures.
Within this role the Registered Nurse is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the KHSC strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Leadership

Collaborates with the team members, facilitating efficient patient care flow and addressing issues as they arise.

Collaborates with the development of clinical guidelines as they pertain to the assigned patient population

Collaborates with the team to ensure appropriate skill level for patient support and staff learning needs have been met.

Identifies conflict within the team and problem solves effectively as an interdisciplinary team

Leads positive effective communication amongst the team members
Enhance Care Delivery
-
Pre-plans, monitors and identifies supplies and equipment needs for the clinics, along with the promotion of fiscal responsibility and cost effectiveness.

Collaboration with the team to identify needed equipment, educational support needs, and/or identifies equipment in need of repair
-
Supports best practice, patient and staff safety, infection control practices.

Promotes and helps to coordinate patient delivery and access to care closer to home
Education
- Serves as a clinical expert promoting and ensuring adherence to evidence based practice, policy, procedure and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) Standards.
- Participates in Oncology conferences, workshops and continuing education training sessions.
- Supports staff orientation and develops needs.
- Establishes learning and performance goals for professional development
Nursing Care

Initiates and coordinates interprofessional team assessments and plans of care including physical, spiritual and psychosocial needs of patients.

Demonstrates the use of critical thinking skills using best practice guidelines and experience during patient encounters across the cancer trajectory.

Promotes amongst the team the use of symptom management and monitoring parameters related to the disease and their selected treatment plans
-
In collaboration with Care Team, ensures patients are completely prepared for systemic therapies.

Plans, organizes and establishes priorities based on individual patient’s needs and scheduled activities and adjusts priorities and activities in response to unanticipated events.

Develops plan of care to achieve identified patient goals within the ambulatory and/or inpatient setting and including planning for transitions within and from the hospital setting.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Eligible for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

de Souza Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certification required.
-
BScN preferred.
-
CNA Certification in Oncology Nursing [CON(C)] preferred and/or working toward certification within the first 5 years of employment.
-
Involvement in related professional organizations (eg. CANO, RNAO) preferred.
-
2 years’ recent experience in Oncology Nursing preferred.
-
Effective communication and ability to work in a busy environment.
-
Committed to the growth and development of self and others.

Demonstrates professionalism, leadership and enthusiasm when working with others.
