This position has an initial appointment of 1 year, with the potential to extend for another 4 years.

**Location -**This role is in-person; however, some travel may be required. Additionally, this position is eligible for the hybrid Work From Home Program. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Over the next five years, the Critical Approaches to Indigenous Relationality (CAIR) project will bring together 25 research projects housed with partners in Indigenous communities and other post-secondary institutions in Canada and the United States. The work of the grant seeks to research the contributions that Indigenous relationality makes towards Indigenous nationhood and knowledge production. The overarching goal of the project is to provide spaces, resources, and support for Indigenous scholars and community partners to critically explore relationality in localized contexts and engage in collaborative, applied forms of inquiry and knowledge mobilization surrounding relationality at intersocietal scales. Each of the 25 sub-research projects responds to the main question through one of three core themes:

  • Theorizing and transforming Indigenous governance systems
  • Critical, local, and global approaches to Indigenous relationality
  • Honouring our elders and training our youth through intergenerational knowledge transfer

The successful candidate will support the CAIR Directors to advance the project’s three overarching objectives:

  • Strengthening Indigenous research networks to support local, regional, and intersocietal knowledge exchange;
  • Using a decentralized research program to theorize relational practices, pedagogies, and methodologies; and
  • Advancing innovative knowledge-mobilization techniques focused on societal engagement.

The Faculty of Native Studies is Canada’s only standalone faculty dedicated to the study of Indigenous issues. Its vision is to create a better society through community engagement, research, and teaching that fosters understanding of Indigenous knowledges, histories, and contemporary realities. The faculty prepares graduates from all disciplines to engage respectfully and effectively with Indigenous communities and perspectives.

  • Develop and execute a communications strategy that includes website and newsletter development, management;

  • Coordinate knowledge dissemination activities, with the goal of sharing research being conducted within the project;

  • Organize and attend weekly staff meetings with the co-chair;

  • Organize and attend monthly Director's Council meetings;

  • Project Management, budgeting, and grant reporting;

  • Event Planning for several CAIR events every year. This includes the execution of the event, as well as documenting and managing follow-up items.

  • Post-Secondary degree/certificate/diploma in a related field (e.g., Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Education, Business/Project Management, Social Sciences field) or equivalent relevant experience may be considered (typically requiring 10 years of demonstrated experience in the field).

  • Knowledge of/experience working with Indigenous communities, scholars, students, Elders, and knowledge-holders.

  • Organized, with strong attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated capacity for seeing multiple sides of difficult problems and the ability to offer thoughtful advice to manage trade-offs to drive an initiative forward.

  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity in problem-solving.

  • Clear communicator with solid written and verbal skills.

  • Ability to manage and change workload and establish clear boundaries.

  • Possess some level of familiarity with any of the following:

    • Grant writing, administration, and grant reporting.
    • Experience interacting with or applying to any of the Tri-Council agencies, but SSHRC in particular, would be an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest and knowledge of Indigenous governance/relationality.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is preferred, as some travel may be required.
  • Experience working with multi-year budgets in excess of $500,000.
  • Experience with project management principles.
  • Familiarity with university ethics applications.
  • Advanced use of Google Workspace, including Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive (particularly important for data/information/file management).
  • Experience managing projects through PeopleSoft, SupplyNet, and FreshService.
  • Experience working with post-secondary students, including:
    • Coordinating interactions and logistics between faculty and students on the grant, particularly for events.
    • Supporting graduate students associated with the grant.

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $63,465 to $79,339.

The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
