About the role

Position Purpose And Summary The Head Athletic Therapist works with varsity student-athletes, coaches and student therapists in injury education, prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and performance enhancement.

Key Areas of Accountability

  • Provide injury education, prevention, recognition, evaluation, management and rehabilitation for TWU athletes, referring for further or alternate medical care as necessary. Serve as a liaison between student-athletes, Athletics staff, the TWU Wellness Centre and allied Health Care Professionals.
  • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate Assistant Athletic Therapist and student therapists. Provide training on proper acute and emergency injury care and management, orthopedic injury assessment, appropriate rehabilitation techniques, proper taping and wrapping applications, accurate and thorough medical documentation. Contract external practitioners as required.
  • Conduct in-service training clinics for student therapists, coaches, team managers, student - athletes and athletic events staff. Co-ordinate and present the annual Drug Education seminars, as outlined by Canadian Inter-university Sport to all student-athletes. Co-ordinate the annual CPR certification classes for Athletics staff.
  • Maintain regular Therapy Centre hours and coordinate coverage for all home varsity athletic games. Be available to offer assistance to visiting teams and game officials.
  • Develop an annual budget and maintain financial records. Maintain an appropriate inventory of supplies and equipment, keep detailed medical records, communicate regularly with department personnel and the Wellness Centre and develop, implement, maintain and enforce related policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the development of a business plan and raise funds through administering extended therapy services for students, TWU staff and off campus athletes.
  • Serve as a member of the Spartan Athletics Complete Champion Approach design team.
  • Stay apprised of and work with Wellness Centre and Financial Services regarding insurance coverage, policies and risk management. Ensure that a safe and compliant work environment and work practices are carried out.
  • Develop relationships and expand medical “team” for referrals.
  • Act in a manner that exemplifies Jesus Christ in all on and off campus contacts, thereby displaying the qualities of servant leadership fulfilling the mission of the University.

The Person Skills And Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a wide variety of male and female students. Demonstrated skill in the prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation of a variety of sports injuries while maintaining a professional atmosphere. Competence in high quality immediate care including on-site injury assessment and care, the use of therapeutic modalities, emergency life support, and recognition and management of traumatic head and spinal injuries.
  • Ability in preventative strength, flexibility and conditioning programs. Proven skill in the safe and effective application of therapeutic modalities. Ability to use supportive taping and bracing techniques. Ability to maintain superior office records and appropriate medical documentation on all athletes. Proven ability to recruit, supervise and lead other therapists

Education Standards & Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Kinesiology or Athletics Therapy.
  • Certified Athletic Therapist that have maintained status with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience

  • 3 - 4 years in a similar athletic therapy environment.
  • Current accreditation with CPR is required.
  • First Responder certification is recommended.
