About the role:
The Hospital strives to deliver care that is centred on patients and families. Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC)
is the provision of care that is respectful of, and responsive to individual patient/family preferences, needs, and values
and ensures that those values guide all decisions. Creating a caring environment for patients and families ensures
continuity of care and fosters a learning environment. Applicants are required to have a demonstrated knowledge,
understanding and commitment to this care philosophy.
Reporting directly to the Spiritual Care Lead, Indigenous Collaboration, Equity & Inclusion, the Spiritual Care
Associate will provide on‑call evening and weekend spiritual and religious care support to patients, families and staff
within Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC).
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Must provide patient care or services in a manner that is consistent with TBRHSC mission, vision, values and
reflects the philosophy of Patient and Family Centred Care.
* Must treat all information concerning patient affairs or illnesses and/or hospital business as confidential, privileged
information, which must never be discussed except in the course of duty.
* Must be accountable for ensuring the safest patient care and services and for recognizing and reporting safety
incidents or potentially unsafe conditions.
* Must abide by the Code of Conduct, work to foster an inclusive environment that honours each individuals
uniqueness, and provides a culturally safe experience through respect and compassion for all staff, professional
staff, patients, and community partners.
* Provide care that is respectful of religious, spiritual and cultural diversity by supporting ethical discussion and
difficult decision making by residents, patients and their families.
* Work independently and on interprofessional teams in a multi‑faith, multi‑cultural setting.
* Possess excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills to facilitate strong working relationships with
patients, families, team members, and community partners.
* Actively engage patients, their families and interprofessional team members in developing an understanding of the
relationship between spiritual, religious, physical, emotional, psychological and mental well‑being.
* Must be available for call‑ins Monday to Friday from 17:00 to 23:00, and Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to
23:00. The general rotation is 1 week of on‑call followed by 2 weeks off.
* Document in the electronic medical record and provide referrals for follow‑up.
* Attend meetings and training as requested.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Experience:
* Master of Divinity or Master of Theology degree (fully accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in
Canada)
* Successful completion of 2 Basic and 2 Advanced units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through the Canadian
Association for Spiritual Care, preferred
* Experience in providing spiritual care within a health care system
* Faith‑community endorsement
* Familiarity with the range of services offered by Spiritual and Religious Care
* Excellent relational skills and sensitivity to trauma, crisis and bereavement responses
* Sensitivity to diverse cultures
* Working knowledge of computers, PHIPA (Privacy Act), Community resources
Skills/Abilities:
* Ability to establish relationship quickly, assess, problem solve and take required action
* Skilled in organization and time management
* Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
* Ability to be self‑directed and work independently and in a team environment
* Ability to deal with cultural sensitivity
* Ability to operate related equipment, including computer applications and information technology
Salary Range: $35.920 to 44.900
The Health Sciences Centre strives to ensure the safety and security of the patients, visitors, employees and assets
financial and otherwise. All offers of employment to external candidates shall be conditional upon: a satisfactory
Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions; and proof of
full vaccination of all required doses of a COVID‑19 vaccine approved by Health Canada to Occupational Health &
Safety. Candidates will have demonstrated adherence to the Hospital's Code of Conduct. Regular attendance at
work is imperative, therefore, all applicants will have to demonstrate a good attendance record to be considered for
this position.
