About the role

The Opportunity

The Ottawa Senators are seeking a dynamic, trustworthy and hard-working professional to join our Operations team as a Director, Building Operations. This is an excellent opportunity to join an NHL franchise at a director level position which will allow the candidate to become fully engaged in the business of a major league sports team and have an immediate impact.

The Director, Building Operations is responsible for managing a variety of capital projects throughout the year, maintaining all operational aspects of the building and the building grounds, through the efficient management of the conversion, groundkeepers and custodial team members. The Director, Building Operations will oversee a large group of full-time and part-time staff and collaborate with other department leaders in Operations to deliver a best-in class experience for all guests at Canadian Tire Centre.

Key Responsibilities

Ongoing

  • Managing the daily operations of our 18, 500 seat, 666, 000 square foot National Hockey League arena by providing services to users, rental groups, the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, and the general public.

  • Secure operations of the facility by managing all work orders, all conference rooms, project planning and construction, overseeing contractors, game day and night procedures, support ice surface maintenance and activities as needed, facility maintenance, and conversions to and from all events.

  • Responsible for implementing the annual capital program for the facility, hockey club and other Senators Sports & Entertainment entities.

  • Ensuring that all construction initiatives are executed on time, within budgetary constraints, while ensuring quality controls.

  • Responsible for the coordination of contractors, designers, and engineers working on multiple construction projects simultaneously. Execute each assignment with a clear goal in mind, take responsibility and delivering quality projects

  • Coordinate setup requirements and technical requirements for events with appropriate team members and lessees

  • Oversee and monitor contractual services as it relates to the CTC

  • Support the Vice President, Operations to establish budget and ongoing reporting on variance to budget

  • Serve as building liaison to local stagehand crew and international promotion agencies.

  • Participate on committees to assist with event layouts, and other special requirements

  • Direct liaison to the NHL and responsible we comply with all game day procedures, provide reports, and retrofit our building depending on their yearly specifications

  • Responsible for ensuring that the assembly and disassembly of the arena bowl for events are properly executed

  • Responsible for the efficiency and effectiveness of daily operations inside and outside of Canadian Tire Center.

  • Ensure the interior and exterior of the CTC facility are properly maintained on a continuous proactive basis

  • Attend mandatory NHL meetings

  • Responsible for all the waste collection, recycling program, and waste management at the CTC

  • Responsible for ensuring that all timecards, and payroll registers for conversion and custodial team members are verified and authorized

  • Provide leadership and direct supervisors and staff, ensuring all members are properly trained for their position

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate inventory of equipment, furniture, and supplies

  • Assist event promoters with requests, and provide excellent customer service

  • Responsible for ensuring that the conversion and custodial departments are properly staffed with the proper number of team members possessing the required skills on a daily basis and on an event basis

  • Responsible for ensuring that the processes and procedures of the Operations department are updated, implemented and maintained

  • Ensure CTC is in compliance with Health and Safety Regulations, and may act as a member of the OH&S committee

Qualifications (what we look for)

  • 10+ years’ experience in related field

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in relevant field

  • Minimum 5 years’ previous experience in a leadership role within an operations department

  • Strong knowledge of facility operations including drayage, decorators, maintenance, housekeeping, trades, audio/visual, electrical, food service, equipment etc.

  • Able to read and interpret blueprints, and schematics

  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours as needed to support the needs of the business

  • Proficient knowledge of the OH&S Act, Ontario specifically sections 25 & 26 of the Act

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Basic accounting knowledge

  • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays

  • Basic spreadsheet and word processing skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • PMP would be a strong asset

This role falls within a base salary range of $114,300 to $175,000 annually, consistent with the organization’s established salary ranges. Salary ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to market data, internal equity, education, relevant experience, knowledge, and applicable skillset.
