About the role

Reporting to the Director, BC Operations, the Specialist, Health & Safety and Environment (HSSE) is responsible for the effective and consistent regional operationalization of the Canadian HSSE programs.

They support and assist the Director of Operations, who is accountable for the HSSE performance and compliance within BC Operations, and they take a leadership role in the team’s HSSE shared success.

As a key resource in the BC Operations team, they ensure the Canadian HSSE program’s consistency across the BC team, while recognizing BC’s inherent specificities and context.

On-site location: Powell River, BC

Salary range: $90,000 – $110,000

Responsibilities

  • Act as a champion and leader in HSSE.
  • Coach and assist the BC Operations teams and ensure adherence to HSSE expectations and obligations.
    • Lead or assist with environmental permitting and regulatory compliance approvals at the corporate, local, provincial and federal levels.
  • Monitor and report on the BC Operations regulatory compliance.
    • Monitor and identify regulatory changes and propose improvements to remain compliant.
  • Serve as a HSSE subject matter expert and contribute insight to support effective decision making and strategic management.
  • Monitor and report on the regional operationalization, performance and compliance of key Canadian operations HSSE processes, ensure they create the intended value and lead the implementation when needed.
  • Provide HSSE Training.
  • Ensure regional risk assessments are continuously maintained, updated and are effectively leveraged within the BC Operations.
  • Measure, consolidate, analyze and report on regional HSSE data and statistics.
  • Lead audit, verification, and performance processes relevant to measuring regional compliance, and performance for the propose of providing recommendations and improvement opportunities.
  • Coach, assist and/or lead the investigation of regional HSSE incidents and events, and participate, as needed, to the investigation of incidents across Canada.
  • Manage, monitor, and support the implementation of regional HSSE actions, recommendations, and initiatives.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of the Canadian HSSE program through the Canadian HSSE Working Groups and work closely with their HSSE colleagues across Canada.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of progressive HSSE experience, including on-site experience at hydroelectric dam facilities, within industrial operations and/or construction environments.

  • Completion of a degree or diploma in Environmental Science/Studies, HSSE, Biology, or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated practical knowledge of applicable Canadian/provincial HSSE and environmental regulatory requirements; experience supporting environmental permitting and compliance is an asset.

  • Proven experience delivering HSSE programs, conducting site inspections, audits, and supporting incident investigations, including corrective action tracking.

  • Strong analytical and reporting skills, including the ability to consolidate and communicate HSSE and environmental performance metrics.

  • Structured, organized, and disciplined approach to work, with strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with operations teams and manage contractors.

  • Bilingualism (French & English) is an asset
