About the role
The Controls Engineer is a hands-on position that will serve as a technical leader for the maintenance staff in automation, instrumentation and control for Kitchener and Scotland Neck rubber compounding plants. The Controls Engineer will assist in the execution of engineering projects that aim to improve the manufacturing process. They will also supervise and manage some capital projects. This position reports to the Director of Engineering.
Responsibilities:
- Provide controls and automated system support for all ongoing and new operations in all business units.
- Conduct process problem-solving including trouble shooting, repair and root cause analysis support.
- Execute improvements in machine maintainability and reliability. Provide training to less experienced plant-based technicians who are responsible for maintaining the work cells.
- Prepare as-built drawings and update the existing electrical drawings as required, to ensure all electrical schematics for all equipment are up to date.
- Lead project integration activities (set architecture, perform and coordinate the programming, configuration and testing, PLC systems).
- Provide assistance in control panel design, instrumentation selection, and network equipment specification and configuration.
- Complete projects by taking ownership of deliverables and using technical and project management skills.
- Provide training on the developed control systems and procedures for operations and maintenance.
- Ensure equipment complies with all relevant standards and regulations
- Develop critical spare parts lists and ensure parts are procured and set up in the replenishment system - Ensure version controls and backups are managed for all programmable devices.
- Is a safety advocate; lead by example by complying with all plant and Occupational Health and Safety policies
- Additional duties as assigned.
Required Experience, Education and Skills:
- Must have a Professional Engineering Degree or relevant experience - At least 5 years’ experience in a high paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong Knowledge of automation and control systems AB Control Logix, Factory Talk View.
- Advanced working Knowledge of Siemens STEP 7.
- Knowledge of Visual Basic, C language and Access data base.
- Proven skills in Metrology, Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Strong computer skills and specifically in AutoCAD (2D, 3D).
- Experience with different communication protocols such as control net, Profinet, Profibus and Modbus.
- Experienced with Ethernet based control networks.
- Knowledgeable in Pneumatic, Hydraulics and Control Systems.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent planning and organizational, decision making, project management and problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to travel within North America.
