Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the permanent, full-time position of Shop Technician/Driver with the Emergency Fleet division of Corporate Fleet with Property, Fleet & Environment.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Emergency Fleet, the Shop Technician/Driver will be responsible for the safe transporting of all types of Vehicles/Equipment maintained by Emergency Fleet. This will include but not limited to all Heavy Fire Apparatus , i.e. Aerial Ladders/Platforms, Rescue Pumpers, Tankers, Tactical Support, and light/medium Rescue Vehicles, Forklift, Cars and Light Trucks. The incumbent will be required to assist Fleet Mechanics with repairs and maintenance of all types of vehicles and equipment. The position is also required to carryout shop equipment maintenance/cleaning, parts pick up and other duties as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate large apparatus in heavy city traffic and rural setting safely
- Vehicle hostling and equipment change over
- Ability to do repeated lifting of 10 to 20 kg, with the occasional lifting of 22.5 kg
- Routine cleaning and maintenance of all shop areas and equipment
- Remove and install apparatus firefighting equipment as necessary
- Pickup and deliver parts and equipment
- Receive, accept and complete work orders and assigned tasks through use of computerized work order fleet management system, ie. Fleet Focus
- Must be willing to support fleet maintenance on overtime
- Deliver fuel in emergency situations
- Conduct snowplowing duties for Emergency Fleet
- Assist with other related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
- Professional Driver Training Course
- Must possess a valid N.S. Driver’s License, Class 3 with air endorsement
- Clear Driver’s Abstract
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience operating Class 8 truck
- Experience in mechanical repairs of heavy/light vehicles /equipment would be an asset
- A working knowledge of fire apparatus would be and asset
- Familiar with Occupational Health and Safety practices
- Must have, or be willing to take training in: WHIMIS, First Aid and computers
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Willingness to work under adverse weather conditions
- Willingness and ability to work in emergency situation, i.e. Fire scenes
- Must to available to work overtime
- Must have a strong sense of customer service and satisfaction for both internal and external customers
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time
HOURS OF WORK: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm, 40 hours per week, some overtime may be required.
SALARY: $76,249.51, as per the IAFF Collective Agreement
WORK LOCATION: Emergency Fleet Garage, 34 Red Bridge Pond Rd., Dartmouth, NS
