Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a full-time PLACE Education Assistant at Clover Bar Junior High.

Clover Bar Junior High serves approximately 485 students in grades 7 to 9, with 23 teaching staff and 11 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB.

Clover Bar Junior High staff work hard to help students become the best they can be, providing opportunities to be engaged in their learning as well as involved in a variety of extracurricular activities such as art, band, drama, construction, foods, team sports and social activities.

The Practical Learning and Community Education (PLACE) Program is a specialized system program designed to meet the needs of students identified with moderate cognitive (intellectual) disabilities and significant delays in most areas of development including physical, medical, sensory or behavioural challenges. The focus of the program is to improve academic, communication, self-care, social, vocational and independent–living skills within a safe and structured learning environment, as well as within the community. PLACE students will receive a high school certificate of completion, rather than a high school diploma.

Flexible and responsive instruction is guided by an Instructional Support Plan (ISP), builds on individual strengths and needs and follows the Alberta Education Programs of Study, with adaptations or modifications as necessary. The PLACE Program is supported by Elk Island Public Schools’ Specialized Supports multi-disciplinary team.

JOB SUMMARY

The Education Assistant (EA) assists teachers in creating

a welcoming, safe, and caring classroom that supports effective learning and

student success. Reporting to the Principal, the EA is assigned to assist

teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom

and during school activities. This includes providing student supervision and

assisting students with personal, physical, and medical care. Under the

direction of the teacher, and through interdisciplinary team planning, the position

supports programming for students and assists with the implementation of

developmental and behavioural strategies. The Certified EA has received specialized training to assist

children and

youth who have a wide range of abilities and exceptionalities including

significant emotional and behavioural challenges, learning difficulties and

complex physical health concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High School Diploma
  • Preference will be given to candidates with an Educational Assistant Certificate or a comparable post-secondary diploma or certificate
  • Participation in the EIPS Education Assistant Internship Program is considered an asset

Experience

  • 2 years of related experience working with children or youth.
  • Experience working in a school is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written

    communication skills.

  • Ability to take direction and work in a

    multi-disciplinary team environment as well as independently with minimal

    supervision.

  • Knowledge of classroom routines,

    assistive technology and other care equipment.

  • Experience providing complex personal and

    physical care.

  • Ability to remain calm in a high stress,

    fast-paced environment.

  • Experience using de-escalation, emotional

    regulation, and co-regulation techniques.

  • Strong collaboration, organizational, and

    time management skills.

  • Flexibility, patience, sensitivity,

    tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity, and imagination.

  • Knowledge of workplace safety and

    awareness of applicable Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

  • Good knowledge of

    computers and applicable technology.

Qualifications, Certifications

  • First Aid certificate would be an asset

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an asset
