Join St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake as a Emergency Department Physician!

Company Description

St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake (SJGHEL) is a patient focused, community driven, and quality oriented healthcare organization dedicated to providing safe, high-quality care to the communities we serve. We are committed to advancing healthcare excellence across rural Northern Ontario, strengthening interprofessional collaboration, enhancing quality and safety, and ensuring accessible, patient centered care for all.

SJGHEL is a community-focused hospital where physicians are valued, supported, and empowered to deliver outstanding care. Every day and every interaction reflects our shared values of Compassion, Humility and Harmony, Respect, Integrity, Social Responsibility, and the Sacredness of Life. Our collaborative culture and close-knit physician group make this an ideal environment to build a rewarding and sustainable career in emergency medicine.

The hospital operates 55 acute care beds, 64 long-term care beds, and 72 mental health and addictions beds, supported by a wide range of services including a six-bed ICU with regional virtual critical care support, 24/7 surgical and anesthesia coverage, diagnostic imaging (CT, X-ray, ultrasound, echocardiography), dialysis, oncology services, infusion clinic, palliative care and hospice units, and telemedicine services.

Additional support is provided by visiting specialists in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Nephrology, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry.

Role Description

Our 24/7 Emergency Department offers a well-supported and efficient clinical environment that has been recently updated with new equipment and safety enhancements. The department includes two resuscitation rooms, four exam rooms, five observation stretchers, three holding beds, and a dedicated safe room.

The ED sees approximately 40–70 patients per 24-hour period, with most presentations being lower acuity while still offering opportunities to manage complex medical cases. Major trauma is rare.

Physicians work alongside a collaborative interdisciplinary team that includes a Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, experienced nursing staff, physiotherapy, a Geriatric Emergency Management Nurse, ward clerks, and 24/7 administrative support. New physicians also benefit from strong mentorship from a supportive local physician group, as well as access to the Emergency Department Peer-to-Peer Program, available 24/7.
