About the role

Perma-Pipe in Camrose, Alberta Canada is hiring Heavy Equipment Operators! The Heavy Equipment Operator I is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment—including trucks, front-end loaders, and forklifts—to support daily plant and yard operations. This position plays a key role in loading and unloading both bare and coated pipe, transporting materials within the PPC yard, and ensuring smooth, continuous production flow. The Operator will also perform laborer duties as needed and is responsible for maintaining, cleaning, and securing all assigned equipment in accordance with company policies and safety regulations.

Position Must Haves: Ability to commute - Camrose, AB: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work Schedule - Monday to Friday; Night shift rotation; Weekends as needed; 24/7 availability may be required

Must Be - Flexible to work varied shifts, weekends, or on-call assignments as required

Shift - Must be able to work 10-hour shifts

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, front-end loaders, and forklifts in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Load and unload bare and coated pipe from trucks and plant facilities.
  • Transport pipe and materials within the PPC yard to designated storage areas.
  • Perform pre-operation inspections and minor maintenance such as cleaning, lubricating, and equipment checks.
  • Adhere to all company and regulatory safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Communicate unsafe conditions, near misses, and incidents promptly to supervision.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including work orders, time sheets, inspection logs, and delivery paperwork.
  • Oversee cargo handling and ensure loads are properly secured in compliance with DOT and OSHA regulations.
  • Assist in loading and unloading trucks, ensuring materials are protected from weather and debris is cleaned up.
  • Operate communication tools (radio, phone, computer) to exchange information with supervisors and other operators.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying process efficiencies and participating in workflow enhancements.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, professionalism, and effective communication with coworkers and supervisors.

Required Skills Required Skills:

  • Proficient in the safe operation of heavy equipment, including forklifts, front-end loaders, and trucks.
  • Strong knowledge of equipment inspection, maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Understanding of material handling, load securement, and DOT/OSHA compliance.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform minor equipment servicing.
  • Ability to complete documentation accurately and maintain detailed records.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness in high-traffic areas.
  • Capable of working both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced industrial setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in an industrial or yard setting.
  • Valid heavy equipment operation credentials; forklift certification required.
  • Knowledge of truck and equipment safety standards and preventive maintenance.
  • Proven ability to operate and maintain equipment such as front-end loaders, dozers, and compactors.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to remain composed under pressure.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials up to 50 pounds .
  • Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and operating heavy machinery for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination required for equipment operation.
  • Tolerance for working in outdoor conditions including heat, cold, wind, and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to climb in and out of machinery safely throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather.

Work Environment:

  • Industrial yard and plant setting with both indoor and outdoor exposure.
  • May be exposed to noise, dust, debris, and variable weather conditions.
  • Safety equipment required at all times (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, etc.).
  • Work hours may include overtime, weekends, or evening shifts as required.
  • Hazards associated with moving heavy materials and operating industrial equipment.

Education & Certifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Certification, diploma, or technical training in heavy equipment operation preferred.
  • Forklift operator certification required.
  • Additional equipment operation or safety certifications considered an asset.
