About this Opportunity

Facilities Management is seeking five motivated individuals to fill summer term positions on our Horticulture and Landscape and Sport Field Maintenance teams. These positions will require related experience, a strong interest in, and a good working knowledge of the equipment and best practices associated with the work done by the Landscape and Sport Field Maintenance and Horticulture sections of Grounds.

A willingness and ability to work any recognized shift, including weekends, is expected. From time to time, hours of work may be adjusted to suit operational needs.

*This position is eligible for a Modified Work Schedule*

Job Summary

As stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. Facilities Management clients include faculty, staff and students. Facilities Management reflects high service delivery standards and requirements. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of campus buildings. Grounds maintenance services seek to preserve and enhance the appearance of the campus and the playability of sport fields through the provision of general grounds, horticulture, and landscape and sport field maintenance.

Reporting to either the Grounds Supervisor, Horticulture or Grounds Supervisor, Landscape and Sport Fields, or their delegate, the Grounds Worker I performs some semi-skilled horticulture, or landscape and sport field, tasks, as well as non-skilled general grounds maintenance work. The position operates vehicles and equipment and uses tools to perform the work in a safe and diligent manner by complying with Work Safe BC regulations and following established standard operating procedures and industry best practices.

Job Requirements

Skills:

  • Excellent work ethic and problem solving capability

  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to be tactful, demonstrate good judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member
  • Ability to organize and work under deadlines with conflicting demands
  • Basic use of computerized equipment and software/applications related to work being performed
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and a self-starter
  • Ability to work within a team environment or independently
  • Ability to operate and do basic maintenance on the vehicles, equipment and tools required for the work
  • Willingness to learn best industry practices, standards, methods, cultural and cultivation techniques and procedures in horticulture OR landscape and sport field maintenance work

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Formal education - Grade 12 or equivalent
  • BC Class 5 driver’s license
  • Courses in horticulture science OR turfgrass science are considered to be an asset

Experience:

  • Two years of experience in general grounds maintenance work including performing horticulture OR landscape and sport field maintenance work
  • Two years of experience in operating the vehicles and equipment and using the tools that are required to do the work

Additional Requirements:

  • Sufficient strength, stamina and coordination to perform a variety of tasks continuously
  • Willingness to work any recognized shift including weekends when required
