Role Summary

As a Heavy Duty Mechanic, you will keep GS Construction’s commercial truck and trailer fleet road-ready, providing hands-on service, diagnostics, and preventative maintenance for tandem trucks, equipment haulers, trailers, hydrovac units, and water trucks, with support for our off-road equipment as shop priorities require.

In this role you will be responsible for the following

Truck & Trailer Maintenance – Perform maintenance and repairs on our commercial highway fleet, including Peterbilt and Kenworth tandem trucks, equipment haulers, and trailers, covering air brake systems, suspensions, wheel ends, driveline, lighting, and electrical systems. Hydrovac & Water Truck Service – Maintain and repair hydrovac and water truck units, including PTO drives, vacuum blowers, water pumps, spray systems, and boiler systems. CVIP Inspection Support – Prepare units for CVIP (commercial vehicle safety) inspections and help keep the fleet inspection-ready year-round. Preventative Service – Execute preventative maintenance tasks such as fluid changes, filter replacements and inspections. Diagnostics and Troubleshooting – Identify and solve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using appropriate diagnostic tools and methods. Repair Execution – Complete mechanical repairs including engine work, component replacement, and system adjustments to restore equipment to optimal condition. Off-Road Equipment Support – Support maintenance of off-road equipment, including excavators, loaders, and skid steers, as shop priorities require. Field Service Support – Operate a service truck for occasional on-site diagnostics and repairs, minimizing equipment downtime and supporting field operations. Parts and Tools Management – Identify required parts and tools for each job, communicating needs to the lead mechanic or supervisor to ensure timely repairs. Record Keeping – Accurately document service activities, equipment status, and parts usage in maintenance records and service logs. Team Collaboration – Work closely with the shop team and lead mechanic to prioritize repairs and support field crews, maintaining alignment with project schedules. Safety Compliance – Follow all company safety protocols and OH&S regulations during shop and field work to protect yourself and others on-site.

Qualifications

Journeyperson Truck and Transport Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Technician certification is required; Red Seal endorsement preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience maintaining commercial trucks and trailers; off-road equipment experience is an asset. Proficient in diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air brake systems. Able to read and interpret service manuals and schematics. Authorized to perform CVIP (commercial vehicle safety) inspections, or willing to work toward an inspection licence, is a strong asset. Class 1 or 3 licence with air brake (Q) endorsement is an asset. Valid Class 5 driver’s licence.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on, physically active role based out of our shop in Acheson. You’ll need to be comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs, working under equipment, and handling physically demanding tasks throughout the day. Occasional field service calls may take you to active job sites in all kinds of weather. Extended hours may be required during the construction season.
