GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB

The Senior Discipline Engineer provides safe, "Best For Project" solutions for complex projects, while ensuring regulatory compliance for all engineering deliverables. The Senior Discipline Engineer is responsible for collaborating with other disciplines and team members, completion and storage of all necessary calculations, review and knowledge of all pertinent codes and standards, review of engineering deliverables to ensure adherence to their requirements, planning and monitoring of quality assurance requirements, checks and stamps the work of EIT's, peer review, maintenance and continuous improvement of their technical skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Work in compliance with all Health and Safety rules and regulations for Cementation.
  • Be aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety Department.
  • Ensure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technology.
  • Be a champion for safety, advocating safe behaviour while incorporating safety into the designs produced by the group.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This description lists the core responsibilities and duties of the position. Additional duties deemed to be within the incumbent's capabilities, on an as required basis, may be assigned by management.
  • For this Discipline or group, provide level of effort estimates for proposal submissions.
  • As requested, attend technical conferences, representing Cementations capabilities, and attending seminars that will further Cementation's knowledge.
  • As required, participate in marketing or bid meetings, to answer questions related to project scope, or Cementation's technical capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Project Services and Operations to produce "Best For Project" designs that are safe, reflect the client's operability requirements first, and are constructible.
  • Actively participate in the development of Intermediate Engineers, and Engineers in Training, providing technical direction and mentorship.
  • As an expert in the operation of the Engineering Software used by the group, understand software and hardware needs for the group, including interoperability status of software.
  • Regularly review "state of the art" software/hardware industry developments, mitigating opportunities and risks to ensure long term technical capability and viability.
  • Lead the development of "off the shelf" design projects.
  • Lead the maintenance and development of departmental standards as assigned, ensuring conformance with current codes, standards and mining regulations.
  • As assigned, develop and implement and use Discipline Specific standards include specifications, design basis and criteria templates, design spreadsheets, workflow procedures, change management forms.
  • Provide direction and supervision of Engineers in Training, including technical review of work, compliance with company and regulatory standards, codes and regulations. Approve and Stamp the work.
  • Participate in group recruiting efforts by interviewing and assessing candidates.
  • In collaboration with other Discipline Leads and reflecting project requirements, prepare Scope of Work technical descriptions as appropriate for Procurement packages, including references to appropriate design documents.
  • Identify Long Lead Procurement items, understand current industry delivery periods, providing technical and scope of work documents and collaborating with Procurement in the issuance of procurement packages to ensure that project schedule is met.
  • Provide technical assistance during tender periods to answer questions, assess vendor packages and recommend winning bidder.
  • Provide technical assistance during the fabrication/manufacturing period, providing procurement with technical information and support to ensure that Client and Project requirements are met.
  • As required, attend design review meetings, answering questions related to design basis and criteria.
  • At Conceptual stage, make recommendations on basic type or style of system (mechanical or electrical equipment or structure) then collaborate with Designers to pre-select designs from Cementation's existing portfolio of projects.
  • Collaborate with Designers to establish how drawings will be laid out to ensure that the Engineer's requirements will be adequately conveyed.
  • Complete and file all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, company and Client standards. Collaborate with, check and approve the calculations of the Engineer in Training.
  • Select Structural System and components, completing all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, Cementation and Client standards.
  • Use the most current versions of Codes, standards, regulations, company and client standards.
  • Participate in Design Reviews, ensuring that the plant completely satisfies it's fundamental purpose, while being operated and maintained safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in Design Reviews, ensuring that regulatory, safety and client operability requirements are met, and collaborating with Operations to ensure that the plant will be built in the safest, most efficient and cost effective manner possible.
  • At various project phases, participate in Risk Assessments, identifying and mitigating risks that are deemed to be unacceptable.
  • At various project phases, complete timely review and mark-up of drawings, ensuring collaboration with other disciplines, project managers, project services and operations, designers and quality group to ensure timely "one time only" reviews. Ensure compliance to Engineering Design calculations, codes, standards and regulations.
  • Complete code and math checks of your own work. As requested, complete code and math checks of other Engineers.
  • Conduct Peer Review of Engineering Designs, and Engineering Calculations as required to ensure "Best For Project" designs, best industry practice and compliance with codes, standards, regulations, Cementation and Client Standards.
  • During construction, assess and provide technical recommendations in response to Field enquiries.
  • In providing Field solutions, understand and enforce Change Management Principals, use Cementation standard Forms, ensuring that Project Scope, Budget and Schedule are respected at all times.
  • During project close-out, understand and ensure that all pertinent regulatory, Cementation and Client requirements have been met, and provide necessary documentation.
  • Ensure that Project Deliverables, such as drawings and specifications reflect as-built information, and that As-built or Record drawings are issued. As necessary, use due diligence and change management principals to complete engineering design checks to ensure that all changes meet regulatory, cementation and client requirements.
  • Conduct Quality Assurance shop or on-site reviews of fabricated or constructed work to assure that Quality Control measures have effectively delivered work that complies with regulatory, Cementation and Client requirements.
  • Complete general reviews of Erection and Shop drawings to assure compliance with project requirements and sufficient coordination at interfaces to other vendor supplied items, and to Cementation designed items.
  • Prepare and Issue Shop and On-site review reports, complete with observations and recommendations. Follow up as necessary to ensure that recommendations have been satisfactorily addressed.
  • Prepare Engineering related project close out documentation, as appropriate for compliance with regulatory, Client and Cementation requirements.
  • Through the fabrication and construction phases, actively participate in assuring that all tests, inspections and measurements mandated by regulation or by the Engineer-of-Record have been completed and satisfied.
  • Other duties as assigned.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position has the requirement for occasional travel to our project sites and offices.
  • Travel period may range from one day to several weeks.
  • Travel may include overseas assignments.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Has no direct reports, however will direct, oversee, check and stamp the work of EIT's.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Degree or equivalent, accredited by Professional Engineer's Ontario, or other Canadian Professional Engineering body.

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineer's Ontario, or other Canadian Professional Engineering body.

  • Experience in discipline specific design of Medium to Large Underground and Heavy Industrial Infrastructure.

  • Previous relevant work experience in Mining or Heavy Construction. Minimum 5 to 15 years of relevant experience
