This Position reports to:

Quality Manager

Reporting to the Quality Director, the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist coordinates and contributes to improving health, safety, and environmental performance in order to foster a high-performance culture with a strong focus on HSE. He/she ensures the capability, expertise, and support of the organization by applying in-depth HSE knowledge and providing solutions and guidance. He/she ensures effective risk management through HSE excellence across ABB’s entire value chain.

This role contributes to ABB Canada’s Smart Buildings division and is based in Dorval.

The work model is hybrid, with 4 days per week in the office.

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as an HSE interface and fosters a high-performance culture with a strong emphasis on HSE.
  • Assists line managers and supervisors in their respective organizations in understanding their obligations, responsibilities, and requirements for performing their roles in accordance with local HSE laws and ABB management requirements.
  • Ensures that HSE capabilities are optimized and aligned with standards, processes, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Ensures that appropriate HSE-related equipment and tools are available and used effectively.
  • Oversees HSE risk assessments carried out by line management and ensures that all preventive measures required for identified hazards are implemented.
  • Ensures that HSE incidents are reported to management and relevant stakeholders and takes appropriate actions.
  • Supports and promotes behavior change through the local implementation of group-wide and business-specific performance improvement programs and practices.
  • Embeds exemplary health and safety culture and places a strong focus on environmental performance across their assigned organization.
  • Reports on HSE performance and progress regarding the implementation of group-level HSE objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs), as needed.
  • Provides feedback to management and employees on lessons learned and best practices within their own unit and across ABB.
  • Contributes to and/or plans and executes HSE-related projects.
  • Develops project objectives and reports progress to management.
  • Implements ABB policies and standards within their assigned area.
  • Ensures that their area of responsibility is audited.
  • Leads and ensures compliance with group management systems.
  • Relies on the expertise and knowledge of workers to gain deeper understanding of actual work processes, enabling continuous improvement of systems and controls.
  • Engages with external stakeholders (e.g., customers, suppliers) and internal stakeholders to report, raise awareness, secure commitment, and obtain objective feedback on ABB’s HSE efforts and performance.
  • Collaborates with other functions and business partners to drive HSE performance. Coaches, supports, and advises leaders and line managers on HSE matters, reporting on the performance of their respective organizations across ABB’s value chain.
  • Guides, motivates, and develops direct/indirect reports in line with HR policies, to build a strong foundation for implementing group- and business-level policies, standards, programs, and practices.
  • Standardizes the company’s ISO systems.
  • Participates in various HSE/quality meetings.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, diploma, or certificate in HSE or a related field, combined with relevant experience in an industrial environment of at least 4 to 5 years.
  • Experience with ISO systems is an asset.
  • Language skills: French (advanced) and English (basic), spoken and written. English is required to communicate with clients outside Quebec.
  • Experience in managing technical and operational HSE projects (lockout/tagout, reduction of environmental emissions, etc.).
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental laws and regulations.
