The Senior Lead Engineer, Mechanical and Rotating Equipment provides Mechanical Engineering oversight to and is the overall technical authority for the design, development, optimization and maintenance of power generation equipment, systems, and facilities within the EEC generating asset portfolio, with a focus on rotating equipment and associated auxiliary systems.

This role directly supports the Manager Maintenance Engineering with the development and execution of engineering standards, strategies, techniques, programs and activities that optimize the efficiency, reliability and operational flexibility of power generation equipment, and ensures compliance with EEC’s APEGA Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP), regulatory, and industry standards. The role also provides technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced rotating equipment and balance of plant mechanical engineers.

Major responsibilities:

  • Define, make key decisions for and implement EEC mechanical specifications, standards, guidelines, and technical reference documentation.
  • Support the assessment of rotating equipment for life expectancy evaluation and effectiveness of maintenance.
  • Lead and support the study and analysis of complex or recurring problems relating to rotating equipment and recommend appropriate solutions. Review the performance, reliability & availability, vibrations and trending.
  • Maintain expertise in the areas of condition monitoring and predictive maintenance and provide support and coaching for development of staff expertise.
  • Support shop and field tests for existing or new equipment, prepare start-up or overhaul procedures, establish or verify quality requirements on rotating equipment, perform reliability improvement review, maintain and update standards, procedures and specifications and work as Rotating Equipment Engineer to resolve any failures or problem areas.
  • Ensure relevant code, technical and regulatory knowledge and information is applied to mechanical and rotating equipment decisions, resulting in regulatory compliant outcomes.
  • Provide professional and technical engineering supervision, guidance, mentoring and support to EEC mechanical and rotating equipment engineers.
  • Establish and implement mechanical engineer competency standards and requirements.
  • Ensure accuracy of generating equipment drawings and technical manuals.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for mechanical maintenance, equipment optimization, efficiency, and capacity expansion projects based on sound engineering practices.
  • Accountable for EEC’s compliance to its Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP), APEGA requirements, the Safety Codes Act, Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation (PESR), Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) requirements, Pipeline Act, Canadian Standards, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) codes.
  • Ensure accuracy of generating plant and equipment mechanical drawings and technical manuals and that all mechanical equipment is retained within EEC’s Enterprise Asset Management System.
  • Documenting risks within the EEC risk register and developing options for Plant GMs to implement as corrective and preventive actions.

Education required:

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscience in Alberta (APEGA).

Qualifications and experience:

  • Must have 15+ years’ experience as a Professional Engineer having progressed into a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in rotating equipment with previous experience supporting maintenance of gas and steam turbines and other types of rotating equipment.
  • Expert knowledge of Safety Code Act, Canadian Standards, and industry codes.
  • Expert knowledge of thermal power plant equipment, systems and processes and balance of plant equipment.
  • In depth working knowledge and expertise of rotating equipment within power generating facilities coupled with hands-on experience in troubleshooting and repair of industrial and aeroderivative gas turbines, steam turbines, pumps, compressors, fans, gearboxes and other associated auxiliary systems
  • Expert knowledge of Machinery Condition Monitoring and Analysis including vibration, thermography and ultrasound tools and techniques, lubrication, alignment and balancing
  • Expert understanding of engineering and O&M principles and philosophies as well as project management lifecycles and turnaround projects.
  • Ability to develop, document and communicate technical and specialized information to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent Enterprise Asset Management System (IBM Maximo) architecture knowledge and workflow.

Location: This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB). You have the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays and will work in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
