Building Innovations Manager

In this role, you’ll help bring our Zero Emissions Building Programs to life — managing key initiatives, sparking innovation, and building strong connections across the community. Working closely with sector partners, and SWR Program and Project Managers, you’ll take the lead to push the boundaries of high-performance building and empower the sector to embrace a net-zero future.

Sustainable Waterloo Region is a social enterprise non-profit that helps the local business community and the Waterloo region become more environmentally and economically sustainable. Our mission is to catalyze transformation to sustainable systems of energy, mobility, and buildings. We support members of our community in finding the intersection of financial and environmental sustainability, building a community towards a shared vision for the future. Our programs focus on organizational sustainability practices, commuting behavior, regenerative buildings, community GHG impacts, and electric vehicles.
As the Building Innovations Manager you would fulfill the following roles:
Program Design & Development and oversight:
- Lead the design process for new projects and program elements in conjunction with the Executive Director. This includes:
- Program objectives
- Program delivery platforms including online and offline options
- Partnership development and management
- Building and Development Sector research and needs integration
- Enable collaboration between partners in various projects including industry, manufacturers, finance, academia, and municipalities
- Collaboration with industry and academic partners to leverage expertise
- Establish program and project deliverables and timelines
- Ensure all projects and programs meet the sector needs and fulfill funder requirements
- Assist and support the Zero Emissions Building Programs team with financial planning and funding reporting
- Ensure programs and projects operate within budget including possible social enterprise element development
- Support and direct Frameworks Program Manager and other Zero Emissions Building Program team members including contractors, interns, researchers and volunteers
Stakeholder Engagement & Business Development
- Work closely and in collaboration with key stakeholders, as outlined in current and future funding agreements
- Build a strong network and connections with the industry to become a trusted partner
- Lead the Executive Advisory Committee and build other sector engagement tables
- Connect with peers offering similar building innovation exchange programs and when appropriate participate in those programs
- When appropriate, attend conferences and learning opportunities to enhance the value of SWR’s high performance building programs and tools
- Other duties as required
As a strong candidate for this role, you have the following skills, attributes, and experience:
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in project management in the building and development industry.
- Passion for environmental issues, community-based leadership, and the community served by SWR.
- Knowledge and experience with sustainable building, LEED, PassiveHouse, Net-zero and energy modeling.
- Knowledge of program development, program management, and program efficiency best practices
- Strong skills in numerical and qualitative data analysis, research, report writing.
- Consulting and/or project management experience.
- Outstanding organizational skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Charismatic community builder able to build connections across various sectors
- Flexible team player with the ability to work with a diverse group of people.
- Strong internal and external communication skills.
- Results-oriented and self-driven to succeed.
- Impressive time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects.
- University Degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Business or relevant field of study, an asset.
- Availability outside of 9 AM-5 PM for events and volunteer meetings.
Work Location:
This role is hybrid, with current in-office day on Wednesday (subject to change). This position will also require on-site work during community events. Our office is located at evolv1 in Waterloo, Ontario.
Duration:
This is a contract role, September 2025 - May 31, 2027.
Salary:
$65,000 annually
Benefits:
This role is eligible for benefits upon the successful completion of the probationary period within SWR.
