Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Director of Patient Safety, the Patient Safety Specialist plays a critical role in advancing system-wide safety across Acute Care Alberta. This position leads complex reviews, supports advancing patient safety culture, and collaborates with our healthcare partners to drive meaningful improvements and continuous learning in care delivery. Location is flexible within the Province of Alberta. Our Work: We are a team within Quality & Safety and work with our ACA partners to support standardized structures and processes to advance patient safety as outlined in the ACA Quality and Management System and Patient Safety Policy Suite. Our focus is to understand how adverse events happen and support learning and system level changes that will improve the quality and safety of care delivery within Acute Care Alberta. You bring experience with Quality Assurance Reviews and Committees, an interest in complex systems, and the ability to provide expert, practical guidance to advance patient safety. You are comfortable leading initiatives, managing projects, and contributing as a leader in safer patient care. In this role, you will lead and support patient safety projects, programs, meetings, and committees, and contribute to strategic planning and evaluation of patient safety services. You will apply analytical expertise to design, implement, and evaluate standardized metrics and dashboards that support continuous quality and safety improvement across the organization. Key responsibilities include supporting Quality Assurance processes using system analysis methodologies; leveraging available data to proactively identify patient safety risks and develop mitigation strategies; advancing patient safety education to enable a just culture and safety; and applying proactive risk assessment methods, such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). You will develop and maintain quality and safety performance information, support executive‑level reporting, enable collaborative relationships, and provide mentoring, coaching, and project management support. Your work will directly inform leadership decisions and strengthen organizational learning to support safer care across Acute Care Alberta.

Required Qualifications:
A baccalaureate degree in a health care discipline is required. Recent experience leading investigations of clinical adverse events using Systematic Systems Analysis (SSA), Canadian Incident Analysis Framework), or equivalent methodologies is required. Recent experience managing projects or leading initiatives is required. In-depth expert-level knowledge of the theory and application of patient safety and quality improvement principles, including reviews, processes, and tools, is required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation abilities. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and balance multiple competing priorities simultaneously. Evidence of a clear and ongoing pattern of professional and personal development.
