Job Summary

Contributes to the planning, organizing, solution design, development, and deployment of the Remote Aerodrome Visual System (RAVS) as part of the Digital Aerodrome Air Traffic Services (DAATS) program. DAATS is one of NAV CANADA’s three strategic initiative that will transform how Air Traffic Services are provided by introducing remote capabilities.
We are looking for a highly motivated engineer to join our team and be a part of this exciting digital transformation. The Systems Engineer will be accountable for applying specialized knowledge and expertise in preparing plans for the designs and specifications to meet specific operational requirements; participating in projects to procure, implement and certify systems; as well as supporting for the lifecycle management of the RAVS equipment.

Key Accountabilities:

  • The Systems Engineer prepares detailed plans, system designs, and specifications for the provision and implementation of systems, hardware and software, to meet operational, technical and safety requirements. Builds processes and test cases in accordance with Engineering Standards. Provides documentation, training and change management support in transitioning design into operation.
  • The Systems Engineer takes technical leadership in performing medium level projects / subprojects with dollar values typically less than $100K. These projects will normally involve other engineering personnel, a contractor and internal client groups. The Systems Engineer, as required, will also assist a Senior Systems Engineer or more senior Project Manager in the development of large projects.
  • The Systems Engineer contributes to the planning, specifying, and evaluating of hardware and software systems in support of procurement activities.
  • The Systems Engineer provides prompt assistance when requested to investigate technical problems with in-service operational systems and determines root causes, develops work arounds, recommendations and/or implements solutions.
  • The Systems Engineer creates, develops, tests and deploys system solutions.
  • Develops plans to meet project or site-specific requirements.
  • Actively promotes a Safety and Quality culture within the specialty which ultimately will be reflected in the quality of the finished product delivered.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation with a minimum of a bachelor's degree from a recognized university in electrical, electronics, communications or computer engineering.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada.

Experience:

  • 3-5 Years Experience in the planning, design and/or implementation of hardware/software and/or electronic projects.
  • Experience in the development of specifications, standards, and/or procedures.
  • Experience in design, development, procurement, implementation and life-cycle management of surveillance systems or electronic systems.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining relationships and working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with various Operating Systems including MS Windows (Bare-metal and VM) and Linux.
  • Experience with camera and video technology.
  • Experience in the analysis of data and technical information, developing and implementing processes, and preparing verification procedures.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of NAV CANADA organization, business practices and principles.
  • A strong knowledge of systems and equipment which are the responsibility of Surveillance engineering, specifically ATS visual surveillance systems.
  • Knowledge of digital camera operation, performance, and limitations in varying environmental conditions. Knowledge of video streaming, codecs, compression, frame rate, bandwidth usage, resolution, and bitrates.
  • Knowledge of camera and image configuration settings such as Exposure, Aperture, Focus, White Balance, Focal Length, Field of View, etc.
  • Knowledge of how display settings such as Backlight, Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness, White Balance, Color Temperature, and more, affect real world performance.
  • Knowledge of central monitoring systems and protocols.
  • Knowledge of International standards and regulations such as ICAO and EUROCAE for ATS provision with surveillance systems.

Abilities:

  • Ability to write and evaluate technical specifications, standards, statements of work and general engineering documents.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritize and manage multiple priorities with tight or conflicting deadlines in an environment of multiple priorities.
  • Ability to research, develop solutions, learn best practices and new technologies and tools quickly.
  • Ability to create, document and execute test plans, cases, and scripts for software and system changes.
  • Ability to design, test, troubleshoot, debug and test software, hardware and systems.
  • Ability to analyse and synthesize technical information, interpret the results of studies, develop strategies, and provide recommendations to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Ability to take creative and innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders.

Working conditions:

  • This position is based at the Ottawa ANS Location and is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 day(s) per week on site.
  • This position has occasional travel, both domestic and international.
