Why is this role important?

The Editor establishes and upholds English linguistic standards at CIHI, ensuring that all content is clear, consistent, accessible, and aligned with industry best practices. Responsible for editing and proofreading complex, high-profile English projects— including reports, data tables, social media, and web content—the Editor ensures materials are on brand, audience-appropriate, and of the highest quality. This role encompasses various editing types such as plain language, substantive, copy editing, one-voicing, and web optimization.

What you'll do

1.Edit text for logic, flow, consistency, house style, readability, plain language, tone, spelling, punctuation, grammar, accessibility, and SEO.
2. Proofread materials to correct typographical, layout, stylistic, formatting, and other errors in accordance with CIHI and industry standards.
3. Provide English linguistic guidance to staff on accessibility, equity, diversity and inclusion, web writing, and plain language.
4. Respond to internal and external queries regarding English usage, linguistic standards, and documentation.
5. Collaborate with designers to edit or write text for visuals and tailor information presentation to specific audiences.
6. Manage large cross-departmental language and editing projects, including developing plain language training and maintaining the online style guide.
7. Partner with colleagues to develop user experience standards for CIHI products and workflows.
8. Write internal communications to share information with colleagues.
9. Train co-op students and new editors/proofreaders on CIHI processes and standards.
10. Provide quality control and guidance for editing and proofreading work performed by colleagues and vendors.
11. Consult with authors to resolve content, structure, and comprehension issues.
12. Research, establish, and implement English style guidelines in collaboration with the Editing team.
13. Manage editing and proofreading workflows to support production timelines.
14. Participate in organizational meetings and deliver presentations or workshops as needed.

What you'll bring to the table

  • Undergraduate degree in English, Communications or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • 3-5 years of editing and proofreading experience.
  • Experience researching, establishing, and applying linguistic standards within an organization.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage shifting priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
