This position will assist the Summer Literacy Camp Coordinator and Superintendent in administering summer literacy camps in Northern Saskatchewan.

Summer Literacy Camp Vision: Summer Literacy Camps are active, culturally-responsive literacy camps that fundamentally understand that language, culture and experiences define and mold what it means for someone to be immersed in literacies. Summer literacy camps that model miyo-pimatisowin and use Indigenous understandings to build literacy competencies.

Role Overview: The Camp Counsellor will be expected to work as a small, independent team under the direct supervision of a Camp Coordinator to deliver a diverse array of indoor and outdoor literacy-based camp activities in a safe, caring and fun-filled environment. Coordinator & Counsellors must be prepared to demonstrate initiative and creativity to engage the community, and involve parents, elders and other community members in the camp curriculum.

FTE: Full-time
Term of Employment: Temporary (July 6 to 31, 2026)

July 6th-10th (training in Prince Albert)

July 13th-31st (in community)

Salary and Benefits: $23.09/hour

Areas of Responsibility for both positions:

  • Daily planning, organizing, administering of camp activities for groups of children.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of all camp participants during camp hours.
  • Supporting and animating the Summer Literacy Camp Vision.
  • Establishing and maintaining good relationships with community members and soliciting their volunteer participation in the camps.
  • Maintaining accurate camp records as required; Keeping daily attendance and tracking statistics.
  • Work as a camp counselor in some sessions as required or scheduled.
  • Managing and maintaining camp budget and accounts, including all financial records.
  • Ensuring that all camp documentation is maintained and reported as required.
  • Ensuring adherence to all program directives and guidelines.
  • Attend and participate in all camp orientation, training, and evaluation sessions.
  • Mentoring & supervising camp counsellor(s).
  • Submitting weekly camp reports to the Summer Literacy Camp Facilitator.
  • Implementing evaluation tools and working with the camp counsellors to collect information, activity samples, and testimonies from the campers.

Suggested Skills, Attributes, and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years old

  • A positive, friendly, and approachable disposition

  • Adaptable, self-motivated, responsible, enthusiastic, creative

  • Superior planning, organizational and time-management skills

  • Able to work with different personalities/working styles, even in challenging situations

  • Strong situational problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills

  • Demonstrated experience working with groups of children/youth in a summer camp or literacy program setting is an asset

  • Possession of Standard/Emergency First Aid qualification would be an asset
