The First Nations, Métis and Northern Affairs Division of the Ministry of Government Relations works to build and strengthen government relationships with First Nations and Métis people and organizations. It provides expertise on building effective relationships and partnerships; develops and supports the development of First Nations and Métis initiatives, including specific programs in northern Saskatchewan.

Within the Division, we are seeking an experienced leader to join a team of professionals as the Executive Director of the Indigenous and Northern Relations Branch. Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, this position is responsible to:

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with First Nations and Métis partners throughout Saskatchewan
  • Enhance working partnerships with ministry and Crown colleagues and key stakeholders cross-jurisdictionally and in the north to develop effective policy and programs that meet the needs of First Nations and Métis.
  • Lead, coach and manage the team to ensure the business plan goals are achieved and the branch is successful in meeting its measures and targets.
  • Oversee the branch’s programs and initiatives to ensure they are effective and responsive in implementing strategies that address client needs and align with ministry and government policy and direction.
  • Manage fiscal and human resources to ensure the effective use of resources in meeting branch objectives.
  • Participate as a senior leadership team member furthering the ministry and government‐wide goals and objectives.
  • Create and sustain an innovative and supportive environment that enables a high performing team that achieves results based on Our Commitment to Excellence.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Proven ability as a leader with a commitment to create and support an environment that enables staff to be a high performing team by maintaining an engaged workforce and building an inclusive workplace.
  • A Masters’ degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including senior level leadership and management experience.
  • Experience leading strategic initiatives, managing change and achieving results.
  • Knowledge and understanding of business planning, project management, accountability processes and risk management.
  • Experience in facilitation, negotiation and interest-based problem solving; and in in developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with First Nations and Métis and northern organizations and communities, as well as, federal and provincial and municipal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaborate strategically with a wide variety of First Nations and Métis partners, federal, provincial and territorial colleagues, and other stakeholders and balance the needs and interests of these diverse groups.
  • Experience facilitating, leading and supporting internal and external committees, working groups and meetings to achieve objectives and outcomes of the branch.
