About Biotechnological Processes Unit from IMDEA Energy
In the 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁, we work essentially on the production of biofuels and bioproducts through the development of biological processes using different residual substrates and different microorganisms depending on the product we want to obtain. 🧫🔬
Our 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 are:
- Anaerobic fermentation of waste streams for SCFAs and biogas production. 🧪
- Microbial oils production from the carboxylic platform (SCFAs). 💧
- Lignocellulose-based biofuels and bioproducts. ⛽️
- Organic wastes valorization towards alternative food-protein sources. 🥒
The infrastructures of the Biotechnological Processes Unit include several laboratories and a modern pilot plant for the cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms in photobioreactors, which allows us to optimize and scale up the cultivation of microalgae. We also have an anaerobic reactor with a volume of 50 liters, which also allows us to scale up fermentation processes.
The 𝐑&𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 with which we are associated are:
- 𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐑𝐈𝐃 𝐕𝐔𝐄𝐋𝐀 𝐒𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄: to create and develop an innovation HUB for the production of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
- 𝐘𝐀𝐅: Yeast-based solutions for sustainable Aviation Fuels.
- 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐀: Municipal green residues as novel substrates for sustainable bioplastic production via anaerobic fermentation.
- 𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐂: Agroindustry waste valorization into bioethanol by an innovative anaerobic mixed-culture.
- 𝐁𝐈𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐎: Biowaste conversion to H2 and microbial oils for fuel production.
- 𝐔𝐏𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐒: Production of sustainable fuels by upgrading of both digestate and stillage residues through the integration of thermochemical, catalytic and biotechnological processes.
