The bar to deliver world-class games continues to rise, driven by advantages in better hardware and software capabilities. Along with optimizing game development engines, developing infrastructure and workflows for efficient remote and hybrid development, brings new opportunities and engineering challenges that all studios are facing today. Solving these challenges is critical to enabling efficient hybrid teams as well as external globally distributed development partners who help scale during peak phases of development. At The Coalition Studio, through our work on the acclaimed Gears of War franchise, we are tackling these problems head-on by leading engine innovation, developing technical showcase technologies, and delivering world-class workflows, tools and features that are adopted across the wider Xbox Game Studios organization.
As a Lead Project Engineer at The Coalition, you will be a highly valued member of a world class Engine and Game Development team. You should have proficient C++ skills, Unreal Engine experience, be comfortable with Perforce, and have a passion for problem solving. You are a generalist knowledgeable in areas such as Rendering, Systems, Audio, Gameplay and Animation. You will be working in our Xbox Games Technology Group (XGTG) helping generalize tools and workflows ready to be adopted by other game teams across the company. You will be responsible and accountable for managing the internal project we use to showcase our technology and workflows with other studios.
Responsibilities
- Lead groups of XGTG engineers and technical artists in abstracting our tools and workflows so they can be adopted by other Xbox Studios.
- Own and help drive the internal project we use to showcase the technology we share across Xbox.
- Get hands on with our technologies, which span infrastructure written in C# and hosted in the cloud, through to runtime extensions to the Unreal Engine.
- Build core systems and plugins within Unreal Engine, enabling artists, designers, and engineers to be more effective.
- Collaborate closely with content, engineering, and production teams to identify pain points and create cross-team solutions.
- Engage with other studios across Xbox and help identify and provide fixes for performance, memory and developer efficiency issues they might be facing.
- Manage up to 5 engineers and mentor fellow developers and promote best practices across the studio.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.

5+ years experience building and supporting game tools, systems and workflows.

3+ years managing people.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Highly proficient in C++, C# and object-oriented design programming.
- High Quality problem solving abilities.
- Experience working and shipping on multiple modern hardware platforms.
- Effective communication skills; ability to work closely with other high-caliber engineers and artists.
- Comfortably works with all disciplines found within a games studio.
- Experience with the Unreal Engine.
- Experience building game engine tools and tool chains.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
