Company Description Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) provides acute and ambulatory health-care services to communities along Ontario’s western James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts. WAHA serves more than 12,000 people through hospitals in Moose Factory, Fort Albany, and Attawapiskat, as well as a health centre in Moosonee. The organization also delivers regional outpatient programs and paramedicine services throughout the region, including Kashechewan and Peawanuck. WAHA is affiliated with Queen’s University, supporting clinical excellence, education, and research in northern and Indigenous health. Applicants will join a mission-driven organization focused on community-based, culturally safe care in remote and northern environments. Role Description The Director Weeneebayko-Queens Health Education Campus Initiative is a full-time, on-site role located in Moosonee, ON. The Weeneebayko-Queens Health Education Campus Initiative is a partnership grounded in Indigenous self-determination and community leadership, led by the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) and Queen’s Health Sciences (QHS). Rooted in the lands and waters of the Weeneebayko region, the initiative seeks to strengthen community-based education pathways that support Indigenous youth in pursuing and thriving within health professions. The Director provides holistic and relational leadership across all stages of the initiative, from co-creating programs with communities to supporting learners on their journey through to graduation. This work is guided by Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing, and relating, and is anchored in respect for the knowledge systems, languages, and governance of the Nations in the region. The initiative includes a Pathways component which supports Indigenous youth through relational, culturally grounded approaches into postsecondary health education. The Director will also lead the co-creation of a WAHA regional health sciences Campus that delivers community-driven, decolonized education. Reporting to the Executive Sponsor, the Director provides visionary and relational leadership for all aspects of the program. The Director will work in deep partnership with Indigenous leadership, communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, learners, and partners to advance a model of education that reflects Indigenous priorities, strengths, and futures. This role requires a leader who embodies humility, reciprocity, and accountability, and who is committed to disrupting colonial systems and supporting Indigenous resurgence within health education. The Director will support transformation in health education and partner institutions, to uphold Indigenous sovereignty, advance equity, and create meaningful change in education, research, and care.
Qualifications
Relational Leadership and Community Partnership Build and sustain respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities, leadership, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, grounded in trust, accountability, and long-term commitment. Ensure community voices and priorities guide all aspects of the program. Practice consensus-based, culturally responsive, and relationship-centered leadership.
Strategic Leadership and Program Development
Co-create and steward the strategic vision and workplan in alignment with partner/community-defined goals and aspirations. Support the development of a regional campus rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems and land-based learning. Ensure policies, structures, and processes reflect Indigenous values, cultural safety, and lived realities.
Decolonization and Systems Transformation Lead and support efforts to transform institutional structures, addressing systemic racism, colonial practices, and power imbalances within health education. Advance anti-colonial and anti-oppressive approaches in curriculum, governance, and partnerships. Promote treaty responsibilities, Indigenous rights, and ethical relationship-building practices. Program Oversight and Team Support Provide leadership and mentorship to the project team, fostering a culturally safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. Oversee the Pathways programming, ensuring it is responsive to youth, families, and community needs. Support Indigenous approaches to evaluation, emphasizing storytelling, relational accountability, and community-defined success.
Governance and Collaboration Chair the Executive Committee and work collaboratively with partners as co-creators to ensure shared decision-making with intentional outcomes. Support and guide subcommittees, ensuring alignment with values and priorities of the initiative. Strengthen partnerships across organizations, governments, and institutions to support sustainable growth.
Advocacy, Knowledge Sharing, and Resource Development Advocate for sustained funding and resources that support community-led education and infrastructure. Engage in knowledge sharing that honours Indigenous protocols and protects community knowledge. Support culturally appropriate communications that reflect the voices and strengths of the communities. Adaptability and Responsiveness Work in a flexible, responsive manner that honours community timelines, seasonal cycles, and emerging needs. Travel regularly to northern and remote communities and engage meaningfully on the land.
Shared decision-making model with Indigenous partners and leadership through consensus-based and collaborative approaches. Makes recommendations on policy, program design, and partnerships, ensuring alignment with community priorities and institutional requirements.
