About the role

Summary

The Environmental Manager is responsible for the design, development, and operational maintenance of the ERDC Environmental program, ensuring alignment with ERDC’s long-term strategy. This role is responsible for the development of project Environmental policies, procedures, regulatory compliance & corrective action, and training programs to minimize risk, loss, ensure compliance with company guidelines, and relevant local and federal regulations, and manage stakeholder engagement. The ERDC Environmental Manager leads by example, demonstrating the necessary behaviors, attitudes, and mindset to strengthen the project’s Environmental values and culture.

About Us

The ERDC project, located within the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory. ERDC, is a reclamation project located 350 kilometres north of Whitehorse, and lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun. It comprises 242 square kilometres (km2) with numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past-producing mine sites.

Here’s what you can expect in this role:

  • Leads by example, demonstrating the necessary behaviors, attitudes, and mindset to strengthen the project’s environmental values and culture, and acts in a manner to motivate alignment throughout the mine.
  • Oversees the development, administration and maintenance of ERDC environmental policies and procedures. Works with federal, and local regulatory agencies to stay apprised of regulatory laws. Ensures that all ERDC activities are in accordance with the environmental standards and regulations set forth by the Company and federal and local regulatory agencies.
  • Develops strategies that support growth of the environmental functions and enhance environmental practices and performance; provides recommendations on how to improve alignment with ERDC’s overall strategy.
  • Ensures that environmental incident investigations are conducted on a timely basis, and that effective assessment and analysis, identification of corrective action, and desired follow-up are achieved. Provides support and expertise in identifying site risks and provides recommendations on appropriate actions to mitigate risks. Personally leads / conducts investigations of major incidents, making recommendations for corrective action and following up to ensure that proactive steps are implemented. Works with various stakeholders to ensure compliance with incident reporting and develop and monitor environmental processes and systems.
  • Work with corporate and regulatory agencies to resolve and mitigate environmental violations/incidents.
  • Evaluate Environmental department structure and make recommendations for staffing and provide leadership towards Environmental/Site goals.
  • Oversee weekly and monthly meetings with CIRNAC and FNND.
  • Be a partner with all ERDC and Keno Hill departments to educate on environmental compliance and standards. Work with ERDC and Keno Hill departments to resolve issues as they arise.
  • Develops, oversees, and directs all required environmental training for project personnel, employees, and contractors, including the maintenance of company and regulatory records and files.
  • Develop and maintain relevant external partnerships related to workplace environment to share best practices information.
  • Coordinate internal audits and inspections of the project, ensuring strict compliance with company and regulatory environmental requirements, provide recommendations and conduct programs to mitigate gaps in compliance, and follow up to make sure that non- compliance issues are corrected in timely fashion.
  • Develop and implement environmental plans and programs that are compatible with ERDC goals.
  • Must be willing to comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Must follow and understand Environmental rules and regulations, SOP, and work area instructions, participates in safety activities.
  • Comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations. Conducts activities and work in an environmentally responsible manner. Is aware of procedures to minimize impacts to the environment.
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, outside contractors and vendors, and employees in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Work independently and as a member of team effectively.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or a related field and 10+ years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and/or training in the mining industry.
  • Minimum 5 years supervising Environmental professionals or 6 years supervisory experience in the mining environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Safety, Health, Environmental Responsibilities and Accountabilities

All ERDC personnel shall strive to achieve best practice in safety, health, and environmental and assist in the control of incidents, injuries, and loss. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Complying with all necessary requirements put in place to prevent safety or environmental incidents, injuries, or losses.
  • Ensuring the safety and health of themselves and others in the workplace by being responsible for their actions and taking due care while performing their work.
  • Following all environmental requirements and maintaining integrity to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Ensuring all spills are reported in accordance with spill reporting procedures.
  • Identifying, eliminating, and reporting hazards as soon as practicable.
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as soon as practicable.
  • Disclosing all information regarding incidents and cooperating in incident investigations.
  • Assisting in the resolution of health and safety matters in a positive and timely manner.
  • Using and maintaining PPE.
  • Providing suggestions for improving work processes.
  • Assisting Management by supporting change to achieve desired targets.
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits.
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job.
  • Participating in risk assessment methodology.
  • Participating in safety initiatives.
  • Receiving training and instruction as required.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards

Work Environment

Employees will be regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions, including snow and ice, as well as extreme temperatures ranging from cold to heat. The work environment may involve contact with potentially hazardous wildlife, moving mechanical parts, elevated work areas, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the use of explosives. There is also a risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration. Noise levels can occasionally be loud, depending on the task or location on site.

Work Location & Schedule

This position is located in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory with office hours Monday through Friday. The project site is a fly-in fly-out remote mining camp, operating on a rotational schedule of 14 days on and 14 days off. The position will require regular site visits. Camp accommodations and meals are provided while on site. All travel to and from the mine site is arranged through a designated travel agency and coordinated from approved flight hubs.

We are primarily seeking candidates who reside in Whitehorse, Yukon.
