About the Role

Are you a passionate storyteller with a knack for digital media and a deep interest in the food retail industry? Canadian Grocer is seeking a Digital Editor to elevate our content strategy and expand our online presence. In this pivotal role, you'll be instrumental in creating, curating, and amplifying engaging content across all our digital platforms, enhancing discoverability and fostering a vibrant community.

As our Digital Editor, you will be the driving force behind Canadian Grocer's digital content. You'll combine your strong writing and editing skills with a sharp understanding of digital trends and technologies to produce authoritative and insightful content. This role requires exceptional organizational abilities, a proactive approach to cultivating industry relationships, and a hyper-focus on optimizing content for maximum reach and engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

Content Creation & Editorial Operations

  • Multichannel Production: Pitch, write, and edit high-quality content for our website, social media, and five weekly newsletters.
  • Freelance Management: Oversee assignments for freelance writers, ensuring all external contributions meet our quality and accuracy standards.
  • Quality Control: Proofread all materials and supervise the layout of video, images, and graphics to ensure a cohesive visual identity.
  • Logistics: Manage the digital editorial calendar and monthly digital content budgets while ensuring compliance with copyright and privacy standards.

Digital Strategy & SEO

  • Brand Amplification: Maintain a consistent social media presence (3x daily) to drive brand awareness and community engagement.
  • Performance Tracking: Implement and track KPIs using SEO best practices. You will provide weekly, quarterly, and yearly performance updates to brand leadership.
  • Trend Analysis: Stay ahead of the curve regarding digital marketing trends, SEO tools, and emerging technologies to refine our overall strategy.

Community & Relationship Building

  • Networking: Cultivate relationships with industry sources, columnists, and key stakeholders to strengthen the Canadian Grocer community.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Sales, Marketing, Digital Ops, and the Art Department to optimize and monetize content strategies.

Event Coverage

  • Represent the brand at both digital and physical industry events.
  • Provide occasional "on-the-scene" coverage during evenings or weekends for breaking news and special reports.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Professional Background: 5+ years of proven experience as a Digital Editor (B2B experience is highly preferred).
  • Industry Passion: A strong interest in the retailing industry, specifically within the food and grocery sector.
  • Proven Track Record: A robust portfolio of published digital work that demonstrates your ability to engage a professional audience.

Technical Skills & Digital Savvy

  • Editorial Excellence: Exceptional writing, copywriting, and proofreading skills, with a mastery of Canadian Press (CP) Style.
  • Platform Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Content Management Systems (e.g., Drupal), Google Analytics, and social media scheduling tools (e.g., Hootsuite).
  • Design & Web Basics: Proficiency in Photoshop (or similar photo editing tools) and a functional knowledge of HTML.
  • SEO & Growth: In-depth knowledge of SEO best practices and experience using modern marketing and analytics tools to drive discoverability.

Soft Skills & Mindset

  • Organization: Superior time-management skills with the ability to juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Innovation: A creative, problem-solving mindset with a keen eye for detail and a pulse on the latest digital technology and social media trends.
  • Collaboration: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively build relationships with industry sources and internal teams.

Compensation: $65,000 - $75,000 CAD + benefits per year. Our salary ranges are determined by role, skills, experience, education and location.
