About the role
Sqwá First Nation - Communications Coordinator Sqwá First Nation is seeking a skilled and proactive Communications Coordinator to lead the development and implementation of communication strategies across all departments, enhancing both internal and external communications. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this role ensures consistent messaging, promotes community engagement, and supports programs, services, and leadership initiatives.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, while respecting Stó:lō culture and fostering positive relationships within the organization and community.
Duties And Responsibilities Communication Planning & Implementation
- Create and execute internal and external communication plans aligned with Sqwá First Nation's values and priorities.
- Develop newsletters, notices, updates, and correspondence for staff and members.
- Maintain and update the Sqwá First Nation website and social media platforms.
- Produce communication materials to support programs, events, and leadership initiatives.
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all platforms.
Media & Community Relations
- Support media relations by drafting press releases and responding to inquiries.
- Coordinate communications for community engagement sessions, public meetings, and special events.
- Monitor communications channels, respond to inquiries, and direct messages appropriately.
- Track engagement metrics and prepare reports on communication performance.
Other Responsibilities
- Attend monthly membership meetings and other Sqwá events.
- Provide relief or backup to other employees as required based on training and experience.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the CAO.
Required Qualifications
- College diploma or degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of experience working in Indigenous environments, including First Nations communities (asset).
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Canva, WordPress, and social media platforms.
- Ability to compile detailed communications and reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent relationship-building, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong prioritization and listening skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and abide by Sqwá First Nation's policies.
- Knowledge and respect for Stó:lō culture, traditions, and language (asset).
- Valid driver's license with a clean abstract.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Neat appearance, friendly, outgoing, and cooperative personality.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly rate: $33.00 - $37.00 per hour
- Part-time, permanent position (25 hours/week)
- Professional development opportunities supported
Working Hours and Location
- 25 hours per week, flexible between 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
- 30 Landing Dr, Chilliwack, BC V2P 2G2
- Ability to reliably commute or relocate before starting work (required)
