Lab Technician Labs Haematology
About the role
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs phlebotomy on Special Coagulation patients
- Performs maintenance on all centrifuges, stirrers, vortexes monthly; cleans refrigerators and freezers as needed
- Calibrates bench timers, thermal equipment thermometers and hydrometers.
- Daily records thermal equipment and environmental temperatures and humidity.
- Set up ESR and in-house CBC controls
- Prepare and set up ESRs, manual retics, albumin slides, and thick and thin malaria slides
- Files slides and discards outdated blood smears, fluid cytospins and malaria slides.
- Coverslips reviewed smears, bone marrow slides, cytospins and flow cytometry slides.
- Performs inventory of consumable stores and reagents
- Receives, unpacks, and stocks received inventory
- Prepares specimens for send-out to external clients.
- Trains Centennial College Medical Laboratory Technician students
- Rotates through different work areas as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant/Technician Program or equivalent experience required.
- OSMT or CSMLS certification required.
- Minimum of 1 year experience in Hematology is preferred.
- Must demonstrate the ability to work independently and prioritize workload in a fast paced environment
- Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be able to work cooperatively and constructively with other team members
- Must understand and be committed to the mission and values of St. Michael's Hospital
- Must be punctual and have an excellent attendance record.
HOURS OF WORK:Must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as required.
