The Opportunity

McElhanney is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer (P.Eng.) to join our Edmonton, AB team. This role is best suited to a civil engineer who has deep experience delivering civil infrastructure for energy, mining, and heavy industrial projects and is comfortable leading projects, mentoring junior staff, and working directly with clients.

You will play a key role in the design and delivery of civil works for clients in mining, emerging energy, oil & gas, and industrial development, supporting projects from early planning and feasibility through detailed design and construction. This position offers a balance of technical leadership, project coordination, and client interaction within a multidisciplinary consulting environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead or contribute to the design and execution of civil infrastructure projects in the energy and resource sectors (mining, oil & gas, emerging energy, and heavy industrial).
  • Act as a technical lead or project engineer, coordinating civil scope, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Prepare and review civil designs, drawings, reports, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Oversee civil site design including grading, earthworks, stormwater management, access roads, traffic accommodation, and erosion and sediment control.
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines (environmental, survey, geotechnical) and external stakeholders including clients, contractors, and regulators.
  • Participate in site visits, feasibility studies, and due diligence reviews.
  • Support client relationships and business development, including proposal input and identifying repeat or new work.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical review and knowledge sharing.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a P.Eng. designation (registered or eligible in Alberta).
  • 8–15 years of civil engineering experience, ideally within oil & gas, oil sands, mining, or heavy industrial projects.
  • Strong hands on experience with civil site design, including earthworks, drainage, roads, and utilities.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and permitting requirements for energy and resource projects.
  • Experience working in consulting environments and managing multiple projects or deliverables simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and related civil design tools.
  • Confident communicator with experience in client-facing roles.
  • Valid (or in-progress) Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to support field visits as required.

What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $110,000 - $140,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
