HEROS Hockey Staff

BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area is an organization that believes in the promise of all children. Our team works with community volunteers, partners and other supporters to create safe environments for children to be between school and home and to provide caring mentoring relationships for children and youth. Now, more than ever, the kids in our community need us and we are looking for great staff to join our team.

BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking individuals interested in the following position(s):

Competition Number: HS0825 – HEROS Hockey Staff

Positions: One (1)

Status: Part-Time – 5 hours per week

Salary Range: $22.48 per hour

The key responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Teaching youth from beginner to novice, ages 8 – 18, the game of ice hockey.
  • Using the game of ice hockey to teach life skills and empower at-risk youth.
  • Creating a safe and stable environment for youth to experiment, connect, and succeed.
  • Assist children in donning and doffing skates and hockey equipment.
  • Selecting and executing on-ice drills and games.
  • Incorporating HEROS Hockey’s 4 fundamental behaviours of Respect, Listening, Discipline and Having Fun into program delivery.
  • Availability to work 5 hours per week which includes 3 hours of programming and 2 hours of program planning per week
  • Providing direct supervision, behavior management, support and mentoring to youth.
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation and reporting.
  • Following all safety and cleaning protocols set out by HEROS Hockey, AHS and the Agency.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with youth in a group setting.
  • Personal ability to skate at an expert level.
  • Proven experience coaching athletes in various ringette/hockey techniques:
    • Forwards and backwards skating
    • Passing, stickhandling, and shooting
    • Offensive and defensive strategies
  • In the process of completing a degree or diploma in physical education or human services fields such as social work or child and youth care.
  • Demonstrated compassion for the challenges facing youth, balanced with an understanding that sport can connect youth to future opportunities and personal growth.
  • Ability to facilitate groups of children and youth.
  • Ability to function independently and as part of a team.
  • CANSkate and Jumpstart training are assets.
  • Both a Police Information Check and a Child and Youth Intervention Record screening no more than 6 months old are conditions of hire.
