About the role
Overview My client, a leading innovator in quantum computing hardware, is seeking a Team Lead, Quantum Theory to guide their well-established theory group in Canada. The company is building advanced quantum processors designed to reduce computational errors and enable long-term scalability toward fault-tolerant quantum computers.
This role is ideal for a researcher with a strong technical background who also thrives in a leadership position — supporting others, creating alignment, and building a collaborative environment. The successful candidate will help the theory team stay focused on impactful research, while fostering resilience and motivation as they tackle some of the most challenging problems in quantum science.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support the day-to-day activities of the Theory team, ensuring team members have the resources and mentorship they need to succeed.
- Foster a respectful, collaborative, and motivating research culture.
- Guide research directions and ensure alignment with the company’s roadmap and hardware priorities.
- Partner with technical leads across experimental and engineering teams for effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Support the team’s growth through recruitment, mentoring, and skill development.
- Maintain high standards of scientific rigor, documentation, and communication.
Education And Experience
- PhD in Physics, Quantum Information, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in quantum theory, quantum information, or quantum computing research.
- Prior experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating theoretical efforts in academia or industry.
- Strong background in interdisciplinary collaboration and bridging theory with experiment.
Desired Knowledge and Expertise Candidates may bring expertise from one of the following axes, or interest in growing across both:
Bosonic QEC
- Quantum error correction principles and their application in bosonic systems.
- Design and analysis of bosonic codes, including multimode grid codes.
- Strategies for autonomous QEC and logical operations.
cQED & System-Level Modeling
- Modeling of superconducting quantum circuits and cQED dynamics.
- Optimization of control strategies at the pulse level.
- System-level modeling of coherence, performance, and error budgets.
Shared Foundations
- Familiarity with open quantum systems and decoherence mechanisms.
- Strong numerical modeling and analytical skills.
- Effective communication and documentation practices.
Candidate Profile
- Proven ability to mentor, support, and align a collaborative research team.
- Strong communicator across diverse technical backgrounds.
- Capable of managing multiple projects and adapting to evolving priorities.
- Scientific rigor combined with collaborative problem-solving.
- Fluent in English; French proficiency is considered an asset.
