Who are we looking for?
We are looking to add a Senior Safety Codes Officer (Plumbing & Gas) to our dedicated and collaborative Safety Codes team. Reporting to the Manager, Safety Codes, this individual will play a key role in ensuring the integrity, consistency, and enforcement of plumbing and gas codes within the Town. The Senior Safety Codes Officer will serve as a technical leader, providing expert guidance, mentorship, and oversight to support compliance with the National Plumbing Code, Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, and the Alberta Safety Codes Act. Through their leadership and expertise, this individual will help advance public safety, uphold regulatory standards, and contribute to the Town’s commitment to safe and sustainable development.

The salary for this position is between $58.17/hr – 62.14/hr and is based on a 35 hour work week.
What are some of the duties of the Senior Safety Codes Officer (Plumbing & Gas)
- Serve as the technical lead for the enforcement of the National Plumbing Code, Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, Alberta Safety Codes Act, Town bylaws, and the Quality Management Plan as they relate to building construction.
- Review and approve permit applications, and related documentation as assigned to ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and the Quality Management Plan.
- Conduct plumbing and gas inspections within the scope of authority, ensuring technical accuracy, code compliance, and appropriate recordkeeping.
- Act as a subject matter expert for Plumbing & Gas Safety Codes, providing technical guidance, interpretation, and support to internal and external stakeholders, and representing the Town in escalated matters, appeals, or legal proceedings.
- Monitor and report on building or development activity to ensure compliance and address unauthorized work.
- Provide training, mentorship, and technical direction to Safety Codes team members to support consistency and professional development.
- Research and stay current on new building products, construction methods, and industry trends; prepare reports and recommendations as required.
- Liaise with regulatory bodies, associations, committees, and other departments; prepare and deliver presentations, attend meetings, and contribute to collaborative initiatives.
- Deliver exceptional customer service by responding to public, industry, and municipal inquiries with professionalism, technical accuracy, and integrity.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
**Education and Experience:**Required:
- Certified Plumbing & Gas Group A Safety Codes Officer with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Safety Codes Officer.
- Municipal experience would be considered an asset.
**Skills and Abilities:**Required:
- Strong working knowledge of the Alberta Safety Codes Act, National Plumbing Code, Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, and related legislation.
- Certified Plumbing & Gas Group A Safety Codes Officer with eligibility for Designation of Powers through the Alberta Safety Codes Council.
- Skilled in reviewing, analyzing, and reporting on complex technical and regulatory information.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based, cross-departmental environment.
- Effective communicator with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, able to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, guide, and coach staff while fostering positive, professional relationships with stakeholders.
- Strong political acumen and ability to navigate complex situations involving multiple stakeholders with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe applications, and permit management systems such as Blue Prince or equivalent software.
- Experience contributing to the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and operational improvements.
- Physically capable of performing inspections and site visits, climbing, and standing for extended periods in varied weather conditions.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
- Committed to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment in compliance with all OH&S legislation and Town safety standards.
**Certifications, Licenses and/or Designations:**Required:
- Plumbing & Gas Group A Safety Codes Officer
- Journeyman Plumber/Gasfitter
- Eligibility for Designation of Powers through the Alberta Safety Codes Council
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License
