Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Program Coordinator – Food Services oversees all food-related programs at Boundless Vancouver through effective management of all in-kind donations and purchases, when necessary. They will facilitate and lead the development of a strong food services team comprised of both paid and volunteer mission partners. The Program Coordinator – Food Services also supports special events at Boundless Vancouver with food services, including volunteer appreciation, Back to School, Messy Church, Sunday gatherings and other children & youth programming.

The Program Coordinator – Food Services is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver’s core values, ensure neighbour safety, and demonstrate service excellence.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • In collaboration with Leadership Team, is responsible for planning and coordination related to key food services program at Boundless Vancouver approved by the Leadership Team, including, but not limited to:
  • Daily food rescue and supply, when possible, to community partners.
  • Food related programs (Community Brunch, Cooking Classes, Nourishing Hope Food Program).
  • Food services support for BV “events” (i.e., Alpha, Messy Church, Sunday gathering, Volunteer Appreciation).
  • Supports the Corps Officer and Leadership Team in ongoing strategic planning and asset-mapping (re: food services) to ensure programming reflects community/guest needs.
  • Consults leadership to ensure program and building schedules minimize conflicts and supports integrated mission.
  • Simplifies current operational procedures and protocols, innovating as needed to ensure optimum operational efficiencies.
  • Provides input into the MU’s budget for food programming and regularly monitors revenues/expenses for food services programs to ensure alignment. Works with the Operations Manager to troubleshoot, when needed.
  • Responsible for the ongoing gathering and analysis/evaluation of statistics and other relevant data to innovate effective solutions for improving ministries and programs. Brings continuous quality improvement (CQI) focus to food services.
  • Works collaboratively with leadership and other team members to ensure the full integration of congregational and community ministries, enabling Boundless Vancouver to provide holistic care and hope to our neighbours.
  • Works in collaboration with the Operations Manager regarding scheduling of pick-ups and deliveries assigned to the Operations Support Worker weekly/daily.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, and communicates operational and emergency plans, budget, statistical reports, training/orientation records, policy and procedures for Food Programs in support of Boundless Vancouver’s mission, vision and values and in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements, the Ministry of Health and professional standards of practice.
  • Regularly communicates volunteer needs for food programs with the Community Engagement/Volunteer Coordinator.
  • On-boards, trains, and supervises volunteers for all food services programs in collaboration with the Community Engagement/Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Recruits, on-boards, trains and supervises Food Services staff members. Conducts regular PEACs (performance coaching) with direct report food service staff members in compliance with SA policy.
  • Presents recommendations for Food Services staff development to the Leadership Team.
  • Works with Operations Manager and Community Engagement/Volunteer Coordinator to ensure that all staff and volunteer positions under the food services umbrella have up-to-date, accurate position descriptions in place.
  • Develops relationships and networks with social service providers, government and other SA ministry units and mission partners for special and weekly program needs and participates in/coordinates daily food procurement to achieve zero-spent in food purchases.
  • Gives oversight to year-round food drives in support of Boundless Vancouver’s food service programs.
  • Reporting to the leadership team through regular documentation, develops and implements communication and donor relations strategies for food services, ensuring continued donations through community partnerships.
  • Utilizes food programming and resources to build a community of hope.
  • Responds to service partners’ requests for specific food items, if possible and according to operating policies.
  • Responds to complaints related to food programs, follows up and documents as necessary.
  • Stewards donors for the ongoing benefit of Boundless Vancouver’s food programs.
  • Coordinates the purchasing of food services supplies/equipment and ensures inventory control.
  • Performs food handling, serving, and cooking duties directly.
  • Oversees the daily disposal of all garbage, recycling, and organic waste from food related programs.
  • Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, fire safety, sanitation, environmental, and infection control while performing duties and ensures all team members do likewise.
  • Participates in Occupational Health and Safety Committee meetings and ensures food programs adhere to standards.
  • Develops assessments and surveys for evaluating existing programs and plans changes if necessary.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Reports to the Corps Officer

Directly supervises/oversees employees and volunteers serving with food security programs, such as Food Security Community Service Worker and Canada Summer Jobs seasonal workers.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

Responsible to monitor program budget monthly.

Responsible to steward donor relations for those supporting our food programs.

May receive monetary and/or gift-in-kind donations to be processed to Operations Manager according to policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Angry and abusive people; verbal abuse
  • Work schedule affecting lifestyle
  • Hot/Cold exposure anticipated in an industrial kitchen environment

Position has a somewhat irregular work schedule:

  • 35 hours weekly, Monday to Friday, 7am to 2:30pm

Longer periods of standing, lifting, bending, etc. as food products are received, sorted, and processed for use/distribution. Must be able to perform moderate lifting (50 lbs.) and physical labour for long stretches.

Participates in planning meetings where attentive listening is required and presentation skills are required.

Precautionary Measures

The incumbent is responsible to ensure personal and corporate attention to the following precautionary measures:

  • Workplace Health and safety requirements including wearing of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment
  • Universal precautions (Communicable Disease Control Policy)
  • Foodsafe Training
  • WHMIS Training

education and experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Post-secondary education in nutrition or food services.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

2-4 years of related experience, including experience working with volunteers.

Skills and Capabilities (examples provided below):

  • Demonstrated leadership ability and highly developed interpersonal, multitasking, and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English.
  • Adaptability.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision; a go-getter.
  • Be able to work with and supervise a team consisting of employees and volunteers in a busy and fast paced environment.
  • Evident personal commitment to food recovery/reclamation programs.
  • Current knowledge of issues and trends including best practices in the enhancement of quality of life and food security.
  • Ability to utilize equipment such as various word processing and spreadsheet applications including all MS Office applications and email.
  • Ability to utilize commercial kitchen equipment and appliances in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check clearance is a requirement of this role.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and clean Driver’s abstract.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $47,962.59 to $59,953.24 with a maximum of $71,943.89.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
