POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, the Senior Human Resources Partner acts as an advisor and trusted partner to leaders and managers. This role provides human resources and labour relations advice across the full employee lifecycle, with particular depth in employee relations in a unionized environments, risk management, and organizational effectiveness.
The incumbent operates with a high degree of autonomy and professional judgment, partnering closely with leaders to align people practices with University wide priorities, legislative requirements, collective agreements, and best practices. The role balances strategic advisory responsibilities with case management and contributes to the continuous improvement of HR programs, policies, and employee experiences.
- Strategic HR Advisory
- Act as the primary HR partner for a designated portfolio of clients, providing expert, practical advice to leaders and managers on employee relations risks, obligations, and solutions.
- Advise on the interpretation and application of employment policies, collective agreements, and employment related legislation (including the Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, OHSA, and WSIB).
- Provide strategic guidance on workforce planning, organizational and job design, restructuring, and change management initiatives.
- Advise and hands-on support for recruitment strategies, job evaluation and classification, compensation decisions, and internal equity within established frameworks.
- Partner with leaders and managers to resolve workplace conflict proactively through coaching, facilitation, and mediation.
- Coach leaders and managers on applying people management practices consistently, confidently, and in compliance with university policy, collective agreements and legislation.
- Employee Relations
- Manage employee relations matters, including, investigations, discipline, attendance management, accommodations, disability management, and return to work programs.
- Collaborate with the Senior Labour Relations Specialist to support the grievance process, including preparation, meetings, mediation, and arbitration support
- As a key member of the HR team, contribute to the collective bargaining process by assisting with implementation planning, and post bargaining administration.
- Policy, Programs & Organizational Effectiveness
- Contribute to the development, interpretation, and continuous improvement of HR employment policies, procedures, and tools.
- Provide subject matter expertise to university wide HR initiatives, cross functional projects, and committees related to workplace initiatives.
- Support initiatives that advance equity, diversity, inclusion, employee well being, and respectful workplace practices.
- Stakeholder Partnership & Leadership Enablement
- Build and maintain strong, credible relationships with senior leaders, managers, employees, and HR colleagues.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of presentations and/or workshops to leaders and managers on HR strategies, trends, and risks.
- Mentor and support junior HR team members, sharing expertise and contributing to a collaborative, high performing HR function.
- Data, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Collect and analyze HR metrics to support evidence based decision making and continuous improvement.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and confidential documentation and records management for employee and labour relations cases.
- Identify opportunities to enhance HR service delivery models, tools, and processes.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- University degree in Human Resources, Labour Relations, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or a related field.
- CHRP or CHRL designation is strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, with significant depth in labour and employee relations.
- Demonstrated experience working in complex, unionized environments; experience working as an HR Partner within the post-secondary sector is an asset
- Experience advising leaders on recruitment, job evaluation, compensation, organizational design, disability management and return to work programs.
- Proven experience in grievance handling, workplace investigations, and supporting collective bargaining.
SKILLS
- Expert knowledge of employment legislation and labour relations best practices.
- Strong consultative, coaching, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to influence and advise leaders through sound judgment, credibility, and business acumen.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret trends and data to inform recommendations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Ability to manage multiple complex priorities in a fast paced, highly confidential environment.
