Hourly rate plus 4% in lieu of vacation

Reporting to the Specialist, Climate Action, this position carries out a variety of general duties associated with the City’s Climate Action Plan and the new Transportation Plan.

Duties Include:

  • Coordinate, promote, and attend the City of Vernon’s (COV) bike valet service to provide safe bike storage in downtown Vernon, Polson Park, and at community events.

  • Organize the bike valet schedule for staff and volunteers.

  • Train, schedule and coordinate volunteers for the bike valet.

  • Store and transport bike valet equipment, such as bike racks, tent, table, signage, etc.

  • Source program materials, such as bike valet tickets and signage.

  • Support the development and delivery of communications and marketing materials.

  • Communicate with the public and promote the Transportation and Climate Action plans.

  • Support the creation and delivery of transportation and climate action community workshops.

  • Help facilitate GoByBike Week activities.

  • Assist with the promotion and coordination of the social bike rides.

  • Collect transportation data by helping with traffic and cycling counts.

  • Collaborate with the Youth Climate Corps BC Vernon team.

  • Assist with other related outreach activities, such as the safe street initiative.

  • Develop knowledge of related COV plans and programs (e.g., Official Community Plan).

Required Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled and returning to post-secondary studies.

  • Related work or volunteer experience.

  • Valid BC Drivers’ License Class 5.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comfortable riding a bike or other active modes of transportation in an urban setting.

  • Knowledge of Vernon’s community with experience participating in COV activities or community events that provided opportunities to interact with the public.

  • Solid organizational and planning skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including speaking in group settings.

  • Ability to independently coordinate several projects at one time.

  • Experience with volunteerism.

  • Basic awareness of the new Transportation Plan and the Climate Action Plan

  • Competency with Microsoft 365 and Google Suite.

  • Aptitude for generating social media content (e.g., photo, video, and written posts).

  • Available to regularly work evening shifts, as well as some weekends and statutory holidays.

  • Capable of lifting a maximum of 50lbs, with frequent lifting and carrying of items up to 20lbs.

  • Participate in a creative team setting and in group problem solving.

  • Willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions, including heat and rain, within reasonable safety precautions.

  • Enjoys working with the public and demonstrates strong customer service abilities

  • Enthusiasm for active transportation and climate initiatives.
