About this Opportunity
A willingness and ability to work any recognized shift, including weekends, is expected. From time to time, hours of work may be adjusted to suit operational needs.
Power Engineers work a varied shift schedule of 4-shifts on (2 day shifts & 2 night shifts), 4-shifts off.
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada AND continued employment is dependent upon ongoing eligibility to legally work in Canada.
Job Summary
The Power Engineer supports the safe and efficient operation of the University of Victoria’s central heating plant and mechanical systems across campus. Reporting to the Chief Utilities Engineer and Assistant Chief Utilities Engineer, this role is responsible for maintaining and repairing heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and energy systems in accordance with Technical Safety BC regulations and institutional standards.
The position requires a 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate (minimum), with the ability to independently troubleshoot mechanical systems, support plant operations, and contribute to preventative maintenance programs. This position may also assist with emergent situations across the university, including outside of the physical plant, where skills and safety permit.
Job Requirements
Experience
Minimum 5 years at the journeyperson/technician level, preferably in an institutional environment.
Specialized Knowledge/Education
- Power Engineering Certificate (3rd or 4th Class)
- Completion of recognized trade apprenticeship or training program
- Experience with institutional HVAC systems and central heating plant operations
- Familiarity with DDC and pneumatic controls
- Ammonia plant experience is an asset
Skills/Abilities
- Ability to use initiative and varied trade skills in diagnosing and effecting repairs.
- Ability to interpret technical documentation and plan work accordingly
- Proficient with computerized maintenance and MS Office tools
- Collaborative and service-oriented communication style
- Capable of working independently and managing changing priorities
- Commitment to safety and adherence to regulatory compliance
The following are required prior to commencement of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment:
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract
