Fall 2026
ARTI 247: Design Communication II
Time: Friday 1:00-4:00pm
Delivery Mode: Face-to-Face
Location: Nanaimo Campus

Course description:

  • This course advances visual communication techniques through digital tools for visualizing interior design concepts. Emphasis will be placed on developing 2D presentation skills, advanced rendering and 3D modelling techniques to explore volume, form, and space. SketchUp and drawing software will be used to convey design intent in conceptual and spatial development.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

We are seeking an Interior Designer, Architect, Architectural Technologist, or related design professional with demonstrated expertise in design communication for interior and architectural environments. Candidates must hold a relevant post-secondary credential, including a Bachelor of Interior Design or a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from an appropriately accredited institution.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong portfolio that reflects excellence in both conceptual and technical representation. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong competency in architectural sketching, perspective construction, and rendering techniques, alongside applied experience using Procreate as a tool for digital design communication and spatial visualization.

Candidates must have a minimum of eight years of professional practice experience in interior design, architecture, or a closely related field. Professional designation as a Registered Interior Designer or Architect is considered an asset.

Applicants must also possess practical, working knowledge of SketchUp, including the ability to teach foundational 3D modelling concepts, workflows, and representational strategies as they relate to interior and architectural design. The successful candidate will be comfortable guiding students in developing accurate digital models that communicate volume, proportion, and spatial clarity. Candidates must demonstrate a balance of creative and technical aptitude, with strong visual communication skills and the ability to clearly convey complex spatial and technical concepts.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required, along with the ability to contribute positively within a collaborative academic environment. The successful candidate will be capable of delivering instruction that thoughtfully integrates digital drawing and 3D modeling workflows.

Preferred Qualifications:

Post-secondary teaching experience in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related discipline is strongly preferred, particularly in courses emphasizing advanced design communication, rendering, digital visualization, and 3D modelling.

Professional experience demonstrating the integration of SketchUp, Procreate, and freehand architectural sketching within contemporary design practice is considered a significant asset. Candidates who can clearly articulate the complementary relationship between sketch-based exploration and digital modelling methodologies will be highly regarded.

Please submit the following (Portfolio Submission/Design Work, Written Statement, and Teaching Demonstration video) via email to the Chair at katarina.litva@viu.ca (identifying which posting you are responding to), who will share the submissions with the Search Committee:

Portfolio Submission
Applicants must submit a digital portfolio that demonstrates advanced proficiency in digital visual communication for interior and architectural environments. The portfolio must include the following components:

Design Work

  • Examples of sketching and rendering using Procreate.
  • Demonstration of 3D modelling using SketchUp within interior and architectural contexts.
  • Evidence of integration between 2D sketch-based workflows and 3D modelling processes.
  • Work that reflects the applicant's ability to communicate spatial ideas with clarity, technical precision, and conceptual strength.

Written Statement (Teaching Philosophy)
A written statement describing the applicant's approach to teaching advanced digital visual communication to second-year Interior Design students, including:

  • How they support the transition from sketch-based exploration to 3D modelling
  • How Procreate and SketchUp are positioned as complementary tools within the design process
  • Strategies for reinforcing spatial reasoning, representational clarity, and technical fluency.

Teaching Demonstration
A short teaching demonstration (5-8 minutes), submitted as a video, screen recording, or similar format, that illustrates:

  • Instructional approach to advanced digital visual communication.

  • Methods for guiding students in integrating sketching and 3D modeling workflows.

  • Use of Procreate and/or SketchUp within a design learning context.
