Job description: Under the supervision of Dr. Jerrod Smith the graduate student research assistant will provide research support to analyze qualitative survey and focus group data, facilitate focus groups, take and summarize focus group notes, and formulate recommendations based on the data collected. Under the supervision of Prof. Claudia Mahler the graduate student research assistant will implement revisions to calculus course materials and assessments. This position will work primarily remotely, with some regular on-site and/or remote meetings with the research team and supervisors. Student focus groups will take place on-site.

The research assistant will support a range of activities including, but not limited to:

  • Analyzing and summarizing quantitative and qualitative survey data.
  • Facilitate focus groups, including taking notes and summarizing discussions.
  • Analyzing qualitative focus group data.
  • Formulate recommendations for improving calculus course offerings based on survey and focus group data.
  • Support writing and editing learning outcomes.
  • Work with a team to develop and revise assessments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Specific goals, accountabilities and deliverables will be set at the time of appointment.

Job requirements:

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Calgary.
  • Work independently to manage time and complete multiple complex tasks.
  • Provide regular and timely updates on progress, seek guidance and advice when needed.
  • Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong qualitative research skills (e.g. conducting literature reviews, analyzing and presenting qualitative data).
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills, including an ability to summarize and translate qualitative data and findings in reports.
  • Leadership, self-motivation, self-direction, and an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with LaTeX and/or a procedural programming language is an asset.

Salary: $30/hr for Masters student or $35/hr for PhD student Hours: 110 hours Fixed term: December 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026 (or until 110 hours are completed)

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must be graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Calgary. Preference will be given to MATH/STAT/ACSC/BIST/EDUC/ or CPSC graduate students with a strong interest in undergraduate mathematics education and experience analyzing qualitative data.
