Position Information Join the Neurosciences Acute Care and Trauma Unit! Are you an experienced Registered Nurse with a passion for people and a desire to make difference? We are seeking compassionate and dedicated Registered Nurses to work in our Neuroscience Acute Care Unit.

The NACU is a dynamic and fast-paced Level 2 Critical Care unit which provides care to a complex and diverse patient population. The unit consists of 32 beds, with 12 beds for Trauma, 18 beds for neuro surgical, neurological and stroke patients.

What You Will Do As a Registered Nurse in the NACU, you will care for patients with multisystem trauma, as well as provide acute surgical care of complex vascular, urological, general surgery, neurosurgical, neurological and acute stroke patients.

Duties include:

Complex assessments on a 1-2 hour basis

Wound care and medication management

Frequent trach care and respiratory support in collaboration with the Respiratory Therapy Team

Advanced assessment and procedural sedation

Routine and comprehensive care plan management of each patient, ongoing communication with various healthcare professionals, and participating in unit-based rounds with the overall health care team

The nursing team has a great deal of interaction with our patients, and our RNs even receive personal visits from patients after they have recovered!

About Our Team You will be working with a robust and highly dedicated multidisciplinary team. This includes the Clinical Manager, Clinal Care Leader, Unit Educator, Clinical Nurse Experts, and various unit physicians (TRAUMA and NACU) who work collaboratively with the respective surgical MRP's to provide comprehensive patient care. The nursing team enjoys a collaborative and interactive approach with our physician group. We also have unit specific Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Spiritual Care Interns, and Registered Dieticians who follow our patients routinely.

Training and orientation on the unit We offer a rigorous training and orientation which includes various aspects of critical care training for our patient population. It is a multimodal approach to learning which includes didactic, self-directed, simulation, return demonstration and formal written and oral evaluations.

The didactic portion includes about 3 weeks of full-time learning, followed by approximately 5 weeks of buddy shifts on the unit. The buddy shifts occur across all environments and offer exposure to consolidate learning with a guided mentor and collaborative learning plan. The buddy shifts follow the unit rotation of 2 day, 2 night rotations of 12 hour day and night shift.

What You Will Bring

  • Current Certificate of Competence in the Province of Ontario;
  • Minimum one (1) year Adult Surgical/Medical experience;
  • Successful completion of both Unit and Hospital Competency List;
  • Ability to perform BCLS to the College of Nurses standards;
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.

You will stand out with:

  • ACLS or equivalent course;
  • Previous trauma/neuro experience;
  • Completion of Physical Assessment Course;
  • BSc.N;
  • Proficiency in English and French oral expression (advanced level) and comprehension (advanced level).
