Forest Protection Limited (FPL) invites applications for the FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR. The FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR reports directly to the Air Operations Manager and works within the FPL Flight Operations Department. The FLIGHT OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR is responsible for any process that governs the safe and efficient conduct of all flight operations. They play a key role in the development of new policies, procedures, training, or manuals as they relate to current and future company operations. Under direction from the Air Operations Manager this position will be responsible for the operational control of FPL flights, the FPL Operations Centre and its assigned personnel and processes. This position will be vital to the safe conduct of all flight operations as it will be directly involved in the safety system within the company.

Job Duties

  • Pilot & Operations Oversight

    • Assist the Air Operations Manager in managing pilot schedules.
    • Schedule and manage flights in accordance with the Company Operations Manual (COM) and company SOPs.
    • Monitor pilot duty time, flight time, days on assignment, and days free from duty.
    • Enter relevant operational control information into a database and maintain the data base (e.g. journey logbooks, flight logs, operational logs, schedules and schedule changes, dispatches, etc.).
    • Develop reports and provide briefings to the Air Operations Manager, Chief Pilot and Senior Leadership.
    • Responsible for the FPL Operations Centre, its processes, and daily operations.
    • Coordinate on-call Operations Support Personnel and act in that position during the operating season:
  • Scheduling and deploying appropriate aircraft and aircrew to assignments.

  • Monitoring flight and duty times and rescheduling or restricting operations as required or needed.

  • Maintaining current aircraft and personnel information for relay to authorities in emergency situations.

  • Update and maintain status board of aircraft and personnel.

  • Assist with the coordination of internal support requirements to meet operational commitments. (equipment moves, crew moves, trucks, trailers, licensing, etc.).

  • Co-ordinate and book all department travel and field accommodations for the flight operations and maintain records of all such travel.

  • Vacation relief and backup for Air Operations Manager and Operations Superintendent as required.

  • Fire Operations and Training

    • Receive training on FPL fire operations (ground and air).
    • Coordinate with clients regarding aerial operations and assignments.
    • Train new staff on operational processes related to FPL flights.
    • Develop and deliver new training programs tied to company projects and activities.
  • Flight Operations Documentation

    • Support development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), policies, operational control documents.
    • Develop and implement administration procedures for flight operations assignments.
    • Assist the Air Operations Manager in operational audits (excluding maintenance documents) for all dispatched flights (FPL-owned and subcontracted). Report on findings from the audits.
  • Regulatory Liaison

    • Support updates to the Company Operations Manual, Air Operator Certificate, Fire Suppression Manual, and other operational control documents.
    • Occasionally act as liaison with Transport Canada officials at the authorization and request of the Air Operations Manager.
  • Records & Compliance

    • Assist in management of pilot training records and personnel files.
    • Collect, maintain, and provide training documentation for non-flying operational staff.
  • Business Development Support

    • Contribute to the development of new company policies, processes, training and procedures linked to business growth initiatives.
  • Safety Responsibilities

    • Integrate new safety requirements into flight operations.
    • Actively participate in the FPL company safety program
    • Drive continuous improvement of company safety standards.
  • Perform all key job duties and any others assigned.

Qualifications

  • Pilot Qualifications:
  • Successful candidate possesses a Commercial License or higher is an asset.
  • Experience in a Commercial Air Operation is an asset.
  • Educational Qualifications:
  • Post Secondary Education (Aerial Operations, Business Administration, Sciences, or Engineering) is an asset.
  • Experience:
  • 3 years in an aviation environment as a pilot, dispatcher, operations coordinator, or air traffic controller.
  • 2-5 years of supervisory experience in a business that’s service based. Preferably close to or directly related to emergency response.
  • Preferable to have project management experience.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Canadian Aviation Regulations
  • Clear writing style. Capable of writing and editing procedures, operational notices, and training materials in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel or other large data manipulation software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Can communicate clearly and confidently in high stress and high pace environments. Ideally can coordinate emergency response training events, or other training classes and events with relative ease.
  • A good understanding of safety requirements as they relate to flight operations. A working knowledge of Safety Management Systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Crew Resource Management.
