ROLE OVERVIEW

Thiess is accepting applications for the role of Mine Engineer Supervisor located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The Mine Engineer Supervisor is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring all phases of the short-term planning processes to ensure they are conducted in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner. Unique role requirements include experience in the design and scheduling of truck and excavator operations and in liaison with operational personnel to deliver successful implementation of designs and short-term schedules. The role will also provide geological and technical support to assist in the successful management of the project to deliver project and branch objectives. This position also provides oversight and leadership/mentorship to Geologists on site as their direct supervisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and develop rolling weekly and 3 monthly equipment operation plans and schedules for the mining operation.
  • Manage the Mine's geology team and responsibilities including leading and development for Geologists as their direct supervisor. Support the Geology team to achieve department and project targets while adhering to safety, health, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Ensure any required design amendments due to design non-conformance or operational issues are reevaluated, reissued and communicated for corrective actions accordingly.
  • Incorporate all geotechnical recommendations and information with the Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Include general hazard analysis in the design process.
  • Perform regular pit inspections in conjunction with Supervisors Mining to ensure compliance with design parameters and goals.
  • Coordinate plans and schedules and monitoring of actual progress with operations group.
  • Generate the weekly dig and dump plans and weekend plans with consultation from the Technical Services Superintendent and Operational Management.
  • Ensure implementation and compliance of the Safety Health and Environmental Plans to ensure safe and sustainable mine plans and designs.
  • Generate mine plans and schedules that are in compliance with budgetary and agreed assumptions approved by the Technical Services Superintendent.
  • Provide briefs and plans on ore mining plans and schedules and manage the ore logistics chain from pit to ROM / Crusher feed.
  • Ensure ore reserve estimates are updated with the most recently available information to ensure ore mining schedules are as accurate as possible.
  • Conduct regular and systematic excavation block reconciliations and report on any variances and identify areas for improvement.
  • Stay up to date on industry advancements and continually evaluate, review and determine the most appropriate use of ore mining methodologies for optimal project performance
  • Monitor and maintain computerized equipment planning systems to ensure accurate data is communicated and recorded.
  • Provide accurate and timely advice on equipment requirements and ensure quality decisions are made using accurate knowledge and practice.
  • Oversee maintenance and upgrade of equipment data reporting systems and databases to ensure accuracy and efficiency of reports.
  • Utilize Wenco applications and Infomine to run reports as required
  • Ensure plans and schedules are communicated to required departments and that dig plans are made available to operating crews.
  • Seek endorsement of critical assumptions in designs and schedules from key stakeholders e.g. Technical Services Superintendent, Geotech, Mining, Maintenance personnel.
  • Work in compliance at all times with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including participation in risk assessments, adherence to safe work practices and reporting hazards as per the Internal Responsibility System.
  • Contribute positively to a respectful work environment in compliance with the Code of Conduct and the Healthy, Safe and Respectful Workplace policy.
  • Work in compliance with all policies and procedures and the Employee Handbook
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Proficient in MS Office and mine design, planning and scheduling packages (Vulcan, Deswik, XPAC or SPRY)
  • Planning, design, and scheduling skills
  • Knowledge of relevant provincial and national regulations, guidelines and Canadian standards
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 5 years experience in mining engineering in a hard-rock open pit environment
  • Experience working as a Geologist preferred
  • Experience in working with operational personnel to successfully implement designs
  • Authorization to work lawfully in Canada without sponsorship from Thiess is required (Applicants who qualify as an Intra-Company Transfer under the International Mobility Program may receive assistance from Thiess)
  • Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for ore scanning source

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Mine Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline and years (Master's degree preferred).
  • Professional certification/registration in good standing as a Professional Engineer, or an Engineer in Training (EIT), from the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) (Geotechnical), Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo) registration with Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO), or, Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech) certification with Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Currently based out of the Stobie Open Pit Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; may be required to flex hours on occasion based on operational needs.
  • Occasional local travel as needed
  • Valid driver's license and access to a personal vehicle
  • Office first working model with potential for occasional remote work, as approved
