Freelance Illustrator – Children’s Book
About the role
This role involves illustrating a 14-page children’s picture book centered on Prima, a unique cat in an adoption centre, as she learns to embrace her individuality. The book features simple rhymes and an uplifting message for early readers. The illustrator will be responsible for bringing Prima and the other cats to life, ensuring each character’s personality and appearance are distinct and engaging for young children. The visual style should be playful, cute, and colourful, while maintaining a semi-realistic approach to highlight the differences between the cats. Illustrations will follow a provided storyboard and must capture the warmth and friendly atmosphere of the adoption centre, including detailed backgrounds such as reception, pods, shelves, and other colourful elements. The focus is on expressive faces, varied markings, and the interactions between Prima and her fellow cats, supporting the story’s positive and inclusive themes.
Deliverables
- Create 14 full-colour illustrations based on the provided storyboard, each depicting scenes from the adoption centre.
- Develop unique, expressive cat characters with varied colours, markings, and personalities as described.
- Design engaging backgrounds that reflect the adoption centre’s environment, including reception, pods, shelves, and playful details.
- Ensure illustrations are suitable for early readers, with a playful, semi-realistic, and colourful style.
- Collaborate closely with the author to ensure the artwork aligns with the story’s tone and message.
- Deliver high-resolution digital files ready for print and digital publication.
Requirements
- Strong portfolio demonstrating experience in children’s book illustration, especially with animal characters.
- Ability to create playful, colourful, and semi-realistic artwork that appeals to young children.
- Skilled in digital illustration tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate.
- Attention to detail in character design, facial expressions, and background elements.
- Ability to follow a storyboard and incorporate feedback from the author.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Availability for immediate start and timely delivery of all illustrations.
