About the role

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Software Development: Assist in designing, coding, and testing software applications for custom automation and data collection systems.
  • Integration Support: Work with Controls Engineers, Electrical Designers, and Mechanical Designers to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software.
  • Debugging & Troubleshooting: Participate in diagnosing and resolving software issues during development, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Documentation: Contribute to software documentation, including design specifications, code comments, and testing procedures.
  • Version Control & Standards: Use version control tools (e.g., Git) and follow coding best practices to maintain code quality and consistency.
  • Research & Learning: Explore new programming techniques, and tools to enhance project outcomes and team knowledge.
  • Testing & Validation: Support software validation activities by running test cases, logging results, and implementing feedback.
  • Collaboration: Participate in team meetings, code reviews, and cross-functional project discussions to ensure alignment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute ideas to improve software processes, tools, and team efficiency.

  • Understanding the basics of automation systems, including mechanical/electrical equipment.
  • Using service management software, ticketing systems, and Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Outlook).
  • Maintaining excellent attention to detail and follow-through.

Level of Autonomy and Authority

  • Works under the guidance of senior application specialists and supervisors, within clear guidelines and coding standards.
  • Work is reviewed regularly for progress and accuracy, with opportunities to contribute ideas and improvements.
  • May assist in guiding other students on project tasks.
  • Provides input and makes recommendations on tools, methods, and technical approaches.
  • Works without detailed supervision, but within clear guidelines, defined standards and specifications. Difficult, complex or unusual matters are referred to more senior authority
  • Provides input and makes recommendations to management in areas of improvement

Key Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a College or University program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Coursework or project experience with programming languages such as C#, .NET, Python, or JavaScript; familiarity with SQL and GUI design is an asset.
  • Exposure to automation-related technologies (e.g., PLCs, robotics, industrial communication protocols) is considered an asset but not required.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and development environments (e.g., Visual Studio, VS Code).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with technical concepts (e.g., PLCs, robotics, pneumatics, hydraulics) is an asset
