The wâwâhtêwa Hub will offer a range of services centered on access to intentional arts and cultural programming, while also providing a safe place for coffee, companionship, basic needs, and supported connection to resources for neighbours experiencing vulnerability. Rooted in strong community engagement and positive relationship-building, the wâwâhtêwa Hub will serve as a vital starting point for individuals to connect with resources, express themselves creatively, and build meaningful pathways toward well-being.
Reporting to Manager the wâwâhtêwa Arts and Culture Hub Worker assists with the daily winter season operations of the Arts & Culture Hub, community engagement, and encouraging community members to participate on a voluntary level in a way that fosters improved social, physical and mental health. Provide community members with access to information, support and connections to services within Boyle Street Community Services and external agencies.

Project Purpose
- To create temporary relief for community members who are experiencing homelessness and/or isolation by:
- Providing short-term, daytime respite from the outdoors/weather
- To provide limited basic needs support: basic food (coffee, snacks, bagged lunches, etc.), clothing (donated socks, warm clothing, etc.), feminine hygiene products, etc.
- To foster person-to-person relationships that shift the dynamic between those who are vulnerable and other members of the community to be more positive
- To build relationships that supports efforts toward reconciliation, healing, and forgiveness.
Position Responsibilities
- Develop relationships with community members, identifying strengths and working in a respectful way with a community that has faced trauma and social exclusion.
- Support the creation of an inclusive, safe and friendly environment for all staff, community members and external parties.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive written documentation.
- Deliver crisis intervention as needed, including risk assessment and follow-upuntil the situation has stabilized.
- Maintain a healthy environment by performing a variety of cleaning and housekeeping duties as required: sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning/clearing tables, washing dishes, etc.
- Assist community members in crisis and find positive resolutions.
- Maintain a relationship with all partners of Boyle Street (Interfaith Communities, Edmonton Police Services, EMS, etc.).
- Facilitate light programming within community spaces.
- Work well within a team and rotate job stations.
- Greet community members and leads the effort to develop a warm, friendly, and inviting environment through community engagement, identifying and addressing their immediate needs, and supporting them through referrals.
- All other duties as outlined by program manager.
- BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking, etc.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent. Candidates without a Degree but who have post-secondary education and relevant and related experience will also be considered.
- Understand the challenges and stresses facing people who live in poverty.
- Treat people with respect and in a sensitive manner.
- Knows how to problem-solve with people who face emotional and psychological challenges.
- Able to handle multiple demands at the same time; exceptionally well organized.
- Listens well, has a calm demeanor, and knows how to solve practical problems.
- Possess robust mental health and a commitment to self-care.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel in particular).
- Experience working with Indigenous people and individuals from diversecultures.
- Background in community development, social work, occupational therapy or another related field.
- Valid First Aid certificate or enrolled in a future course
- Police Check with the Vulnerable Sector completed within the past six months and kept up to date (every 3 years)
- Child and Youth Intervention Check completed within the past six months and kept up to date (every 3 years)
- Experience with and knowledge of Indigenous culture and ceremonies is considered an asset.
