Role Summary

As a Backfill / Hoe Pack Operator, you help move underground water and sewer projects forward by placing and compacting trench material that protects infrastructure and ensures work is completed safely and to standard.

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

-Backfill Placement & Trench Grading– Use bucket and auxiliary attachments to place trench backfill in proper lift thicknesses. Ensure even material coverage over pipe, maintain trench alignment, and grade to design elevations.

-Compaction & Soil Stabilization– Operate an excavator with a Hoe Pack to compact bedding, backfill, and trench materials. Apply appropriate vibration pressure and dwell time per lift to achieve uniform density without damaging pipes or structures.

-Trench Safety & Infrastructure Protection– Compact around pipes, CC risers, and valve casings with care. Maintain vertical alignment of casings, avoid over-pressing material, and prevent shifting or displacement of buried infrastructure. Maintain awareness of underground utilities and overhead hazards while working in and around active trenches.

-Attachment Setup & Inspection– Inspect hydraulic fittings for cleanliness and proper threading before attachment. Grease hoe pack and breaker pins regularly, keep breaker pins upright during use and never pry asphalt or concrete with attachments.

-Operating Mode & Controls Management– Ensure machine is in correct hydraulic mode for compaction. Confirm valve positions on the stick are closed when switching between attachments to avoid equipment damage.

-Communication & Coordination– Use clear hand signals, radios, or verbal instructions to coordinate with crew. Adjust movements based on trench sequencing and foreman direction.

-Site Safety & Compliance– Follow Alberta OHS, ground disturbance rules, and GS Construction safety protocols. Maintain a clean and organized worksite. Participate in daily hazard assessments and report any unsafe conditions or equipment defects immediately.

-Equipment Care & Maintenance– Perform daily checks on fluids, hoses, and fittings. Grease, refuel, and clean equipment as needed to maintain safe operation.

  • Ability to read and work from grade stakes and site plans.

  • Certifications preferred: CSTS, Ground Disturbance Level II, First Aid/CPR.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • You’ll need to be comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs and handling physically demanding tasks throughout the day.

  • Work takes place on active construction sites with heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and live underground utilities.

  • Willing to learn, promote, and implement GS Construction's culture, core values, and "GS Way" processes.

  • Ability to manage tasks, operate effectively, and remain focused in high-pressure, fast-changing environments.

  • Enjoys problem-solving and thinking "outside the box" to develop innovative solutions for complex tasks.

  • Openness to learning from others and collaborating on new ideas and approaches to improve efficiency and teamwork.
